Which is better, Applied Mathematics at IIT Roorkee or Mathematics and Computing at ISM Dhanbad?

RS

studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee

Both IIT Roorkee and ISM Dhanbad are reputed Engineering institutions offering excellent education as well as opportunities. Being an IIT, Roorkee does have a slight advantage over ISM, though ISM too is going to be an IIT one day.

The infrastructure of both institutes is equally good with IIT Roorkee having a slight advantage over ISM because of its early establishment. However, ISM is fast developing and has a beautiful campus. It’s going to house Asia's largest library soon.

Branch-wise, both Applied Mathematics and MNC comprise Mathematical concepts but with a different perspectives. Applied Mathematics has pure math and only those who want to pursue research in the same should go for it. MNC on the other hand is a blend of Maths as well as Computing (coding) and is more in demand than Applied Mathematics. Its scope is also wider than APM and has better placement opportunities.

Eventually, it’s a matter of preferences and not the credibility and worth of the branch that you should focus on.

MSc in Mathematics syllabus is designed in such a way that it focuses entirely on pure mathematical concepts and analysis. It is the backbone of core mathematics which is a stepping stone for the advanced level of research at the doctorate stage. Data Structures and Algorithms, and Theory of Computation are compulsory subjects along with r CS electives such as Database Management Systems, Parallel Programming, and Distributed Computing, The course is somewhat inclined towards computing.

A few other courses covered under this program are as follows:

  • Real Analysis
  • Complex Analysis
  • Linear Algebra
  • Abstract Algebra
  • Functional Analysis
  • Topology of Metric Spaces
  • Numerical Analysis

MSc Mathematics Computing / MSc Applied Mathematics at IIT Guwahati covers courses like

  • Advanced and Applied Linear Algebra
  • Numerical Techniques
  • Statistical Techniques and Computation
  • Applied Functional Analysis
  • Differential Equations and Problems in Various Engineering Fields
  • Coding Theory and Cryptography
  • Statistical Modeling
  • Machine Learning
  • Applied Abstract Algebra

This program focuses mostly on solving problems arising in various branches of Engineering, Economics, Business, and Finance. It also deals with developing algorithms to perform high-order calculations and deals with statistical computation too.

Since the introduction of statistical software like R, SAS and MATLAB, Python, SAGEMATH, and High Order Clusters, Mathematical Computations have improved due to high speed and calculations on large data.
