How is biomedical engineering at NIT Rourkela?

SV
Sudeeksha Verma Posted On : August 14th, 2023
B.Tech from National Institute of Technology, Rourkela (2020)

Usually, two types of people opt for Biomedical engineering at NIT Rourkela, ones who are interested in the branch and ones who have no other option but want the NIT tag. Personally, I feel Biomedical Engineering is going to be the next big thing given the fact that everything s connected directly or indirectly to medical sciences.

NIT Rourkela is considered to be the best choice for Biomedical Engineering even ahead of all old IITs. Here, the students are given the choice to choose their own lab work on their own project and learn from it.

Here are 3 reasons why you should choose NIT Rourkela Biomedical Engineering:

  • Limited seats are available so only the best students are selected based on AIEEE(earlier)/IIT-JEE(now)-B.Tech; GATE/NET(M.Tech/PhD).
  • Highly experienced professors who have strong ties with the industry. Alliance with DAAD, Erasmus Mundus scholarships, IITs, CSIR Labs, and NITs.
  • This department is the biggest Biomedical/Biotechnology Engineering department in India for Tissue Engineering.

Core job opportunities are limited in this field and most students consider joining Software, IT, Analytics, Teaching, and Community-work based companies. However, the institute owing to its market value provides multiple opportunities in higher education.

Biomedical Engineering is a branch with immense potential and it offers a lot of possibilities in the area of research. Pursuing a Biomedical Engineering from NIT Rourkela has these benefits-

  1. NIT R has excellent infrastructure and campus. The college has clubs and sports facilities for students to engage in extracurricular activities.
  2. You will get endless opportunities in Biomedical at NIT R, including a chance at foreign internship if you maintain a decent CGPA. CGPA matters a lot during internship and placement drives.
  3. Biomedical at NIT Rourkela has a supportive faculty and well equipped labs.

However, very few core companies visit the NIT Rourkela campus for placements. But Biomedical students get opportunities for placement in Analytics and IT positions. Coaching institutes also consider Biomedical students during placements. If you work hard, you will get research opportunities in prestigious universities in India and abroad.

Thus, Biomedical Engineering from NIT Rourkela is a very good option for a career in research and the department has a good faculty and all the facilities.

How is biomedical engineering at Manipal institute of technology MIT Manipal?

AG
Alka Gupta Posted On : September 9th, 2023
Studied at Manipal Institute Of Technology

MIT Manipal's BME course is the right combination of engineering and medicine subjects.

Academics

  • The entire curriculum can be divided into three aspects namely technical, non-technical, and medical.
  • The technical aspect Includes subjects that involve instrumentation, electronics, image/signal processing, and engineering mathematics, the Non-technical aspect includes subjects such as tissue engineering, bio-materials, and artificial organs along with electives. Unlike most biomedical engineering courses, the BME program at Manipal focuses a lot on medical subjects too.
  • Students are required to attend classes at Kasturba Medical College (KMC) whose campus is very close to MIT.
  • All subjects within the Basic Clinical Sciences (BCS) like Anatomy, Physiology, Cardiology, Radiology, Radiotherapy, ENT, Anesthesiology, Orthopedics, Ophthalmology, Neurology, etc. are taught between the 3rd and 7th semesters.
  • Additionally, live demonstrations of most medical equipment such as CT/MRI/CATH labs/Physiotherapy sessions/Prosthetic limb implementations, etc. are held to give hands-on experience to students.

Batch Size and Faculty

  • The intake is very low around 25-35 students. This ensures better student-teacher relationships and one-to-one attention to every student.
  • The professors, although very few, are cooperative and approachable.

Internship opportunities:

  • Some international student organizations such as IAESTE or AIESEC offer both technical and non-technical internships to students. To avail of these make sure to sign up in the first year itself.

Placements

  • The placement scenario isn't very good for core biomedical jobs. Only around 3 to 5 core biomedical companies visit and recruit very few students. Some of them are GE, Philips, and BPL Medical Technologies
  • Most MRCs recruit for general, entry-level positions for which every branch is eligible.

 Extra-curriculars

  • The institute has ample opportunities to pursue your passions and many clubs promote diverse fields like robotics to dramatics.
  • BMESI (Biomedical Engineering Society of India - Manipal Chapter) is a student-run technical club associated with the Department of Biomedical Engineering that organizes and participates in a wide range of events and technical programs.

In all the Biomedical Engineering course is one of the best offered by a private engineering institution in the country.

You will get a seat in biomedical engineering with this rank. Many students who opt for biomedical engineering usually end up in other fields. Our country does not have many job opportunities in this field. If you are highly passionate, then go for it. You can either opt for higher studies or go abroad.

Apart from the brand value, NITs are good for getting high exposure in life; you will get a chance to interact with diverse cultures and handle more responsibilities. NITs are also incredible for their extracurricular activities

So, make a wise decision by considering all the aforementioned factors

What is the scope of biomedical engineering from NIT Raipur?

DV
Deepesh Verma Posted On : September 13th, 2023
Studied at National Institute of Technology, Raipur

When I first got into Biomedical at NIT Raipur, I was doubtful whether this was the right decision for me. I wasn’t sure of its scope. But, as I got accustomed to this field of study, I became sure of my choice.

The faculty of the Biomedical department at NIT Raipur is quite friendly and interactive.

In this program, one learns about the design of equipment used in hospitals. In every government and private hospital, there are at least two vacancies available.

The branch deals with 30% Biology and 70% electronics and instrumentation. Most of the subjects are the same as electronics. The latest technology is being developed in this field at a rapid rate. As a student of this branch, you can work on projects like bio3d printers, EMD, BCI, Prosthetics Arm, etc.

As far as campus placements are concerned, they are not good. You can prepare for GATE in Instrumentation, or try for off-campus placements. You can also sit for IT placements at NIT Raipur. Biomedical students from our college intern at prestigious institutions like AIIMS Raipur, IIT Gandhinagar, KIHT Visakhapatnam, and other IITS. If you work hard, you can even intern at MIT, USA.

Thus, Biomedical from NIT Raipur has a lot of scope, given that you set your priorities straight. I recommend you join this course after thoroughly researching its syllabus.

How is NIT Raipur for biomedical engineering?

VR
Vivek Rathore Posted On : September 12th, 2023
B.Tech from National Institute of Technology, Raipur (2016)

Biomedical Engineering is a branch of engineering that deals with the manufacturing of instruments that would serve medical sectors. So, if you have even a slight interest in Medical Science, go for it. If not, I suggest you consider other options.

I feel choosing Biomedical Engineering is actually a bold decision as most engineering aspirants have a sheep mentality and prefer branches like CSE and IT only although they have no interest in them. All they care about are placements and many even regret later in life.

The sad truth is there is very little scope for the Biomedical branch in India and the placement opportunities are limited. The government also does not invest much in this field and only a handful of companies hire the students of this branch. Last year 21 offers were made to 37 students of the branch.

Overall, NIT Raipur is a decent choice for Biomedical as there are several research options too.
