One of the best engineering college near Salt Lake Kolkata

Remarks :

There was a well-organized admission process for entry into the college. The eligibility of the course was passing the higher secondary exam with a minimum percentage of 65 with Physics, Chemistry, and Math as compulsory subjects We had to sit for the West Bengal Joint Entrance exam after our higher secondary exam and according to our rank in this qualifying exam, we were called for the counselling process. After that, we were called for a basic Interview and document-sharing process and then we were handed over the admission letter. The application form can be found on the official website of the college. The application fee is 2000 rupees and the application date starts in the month of June and ends in July of an admission year. I want the Interview process a bit quicker and more streamlined.

Course Curriculum Overview :

I wanted to study Engineering after my higher-secondary exam and I wanted to go for a core subject like Electrical Engineering. I sat for the West Bengal Joint Entrance exam and after getting the required rank I secured admission to my college Guru Nanak Institute of Technology. The college has a very good Electrical Engineering department with state-of-the-art labs for various important subjects like power systems, power electronics, control systems, electrical machines, digital electronics, and computer systems. The faculty was highly qualified with all the HODs being PhD and the faculty-student ratio was 1:30 at our time. Most of the faculties had previous teaching experience at premier Institutes like NIT, JU, and BITS. The teaching method was unique and innovative with practical demonstrations and attention given to each and every student. There were 8 semesters and exams took place at the end of each semester and passing the exams was moderately difficult.

Internships Opportunities :

We had done two Internships during our course. One internship was completed in the third year and the other internship was offered at the end of the fourth year before the last semester exams. The third-year internship was offered by West Bengal State Electricity Transmission Corporation Limited and the subject of the Internship was familiarization with electric transmission systems and other equipment. We had to submit a detailed report at the end of our internship and we did not receive any stipend as the internship was unpaid. The final year internship was offered by West Bengal Power Development Corporation Limited in the area of Power Generation. We had to visit Kolaghat Thermal Power Plant and learn about the entire power generation cycle from start to end. We also aided in the operation of various processes and learned about the modern electronic systems used in new-generation power plants. This was also an unpaid internship.

Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :

The total fees for the entire course were around 4 lakh rupees including the examination charges and library fees. There was no fee hike at our time and the fees for every semester were paid according to the agreement which was done at the time of admission. There was a special scholarship for economically weaker students and a tuition fee waiver scheme was followed to help those who could not afford the high fees, but were qualified to take admission. There was good placement for Computer Science and Electronics students at the end of the course with some of the renowned IT companies like TCS, Wipro, and Tech Mahindra coming into the campus and giving an average CTC of around 2.5-3 lakhs to the students. Although placements suffered for core engineering branches and most of the students from core branches had to search for off-campus opportunities.

Campus Life :

Life on campus was lively and it was a great experience. The annual fest was called 'Tesseract' and various renowned singers and artists were called to the campus for performing. The tech fest was known as the 'GNIT Annual Hackathon' and various professors and students from premier Institutes in West Bengal attended the Hackathon. The annual fest was conducted in the month of December and the Tech fest happened right before the annual fest. There were a large number of good books and foreign journals in the library. There was also a library website indicating the various books and journals available. The classroom had all the necessary amenities like a board, chairs tables, and fans and there were proper windows and ventilation systems. The college has a large cricket ground and various annual sports used to be conducted on the ground including an annual inter-college cricket competition. During our time at college, there was a student's club where any student could report grievances.

Placement Experience:

For placements, the eligibility is from the 5th semester, as companies come with various exams. The official drive begins in our 7th sem, which lasts for a year. We have seen Infosys, Cognizant, PWC, EY, Accenture, IBM, and such companies that help us get placed. Their packages average out at around 5LPA. We have seen the highest package from Maventic so far, with 7 LPA, and have around 90 % placed students. After my degree, I intend to join PwC full-time.

Course Curriculum Overview:

I choose electronics and communication engineering because I have an interest in semiconductor devices and also an interest in theory part. The faculty in our is very helpful and some of our factories are very good knowledge in core subjects. Some of the faculty members hold a Ph.D. degree. Exams were held on time and it was not that difficult to pass the exam. If you prepare 1 month before the semester then you will pass the semester.
