Specifically, theÊBSc (Hons) Sport Coaching at Cardiff Metropolitan University will provideÊ you with opportunities to gain a better understanding of the socially contested nature of the coaching process. You will engage with a range of theories which inform sports coaching and you will develop a critical insight into the application of this knowledge through work based learning experiences. Furthermore, you will be able to apply your knowledge gained from other key disciplines such as: physiology, biomechanics, psychology, ethics, cultural studies, performance analysis and adapted physical activity to a variety of contextual issues in sports coaching.
These elements give the course a unique flavour mixing traditional knowledge and skills with contemporary socio-pedagogical approaches. The practical and contextual knowledge you develop within this programme willÊ allow you to evaluate and modify your own behaviour and that of the performers you may work with in a range of sports. It will also enable you to appreciate the role of the professional coach and to understand the qualities needed to coach effectively.?
Building on the drive to help students develop a range of academic and vocational skills that will better prepare them for employment within sports coaching, the assessment procedures inherent within the programme are diverse. We utilise a range of written assignments, presentations and discussions, practical assessments, reflective practice logs and examinations, in attempts to assess studentsÕ knowledge, understanding, and critical thinking skills. Finally, the modes of assessment provide students with opportunities to engage in formative and summative assessments that have achieved the standard required to progress to the next stage of their degree or to qualify for an award.
Employability & Careers:
Once graduated you will be able to follow a career in coaching and teaching, the leisure industry, sports science support and in the field of sports development. Past graduates have obtained employment in coaching in the UK and abroad in a variety of sporting contexts some examples of which include football coaching in Adelaide, Australia, and in the USA, Assistant Academy Manager for a championship football club, rugby coaching in Singapore, multi-sport coaching in Shanghai and swimming coaching in the UK. In addition graduates have found employment working as sport development officers for local authorities and National Governing Bodies, as fitness consultants and trainers. The subjects studied and skills learnt will also give graduates the opportunity to continue their education to Master's and Doctorate level or undertake a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).
