- M.Phil in Economics at the University of Cambridge is offered on a full-time basis for a duration of 22-months.
- This is an on-campus and thesis-based program.
- The MPhil in Economics is a one-year master’s degree that runs from mid-September to late June or late July.
- This degree is for students candidates who are interested in undertaking a master’s degree that will give them the technical training required to undertake a career as a professional economist.
- Students have to attend the preparatory course in Mathematics and Statistics and take 6 compulsory modules.
- Students have to attend 5 classes for each of the modules in Microeconomics and Macroeconomics and 7 classes for Econometrics.
- The total number of lecture hours for the course is either 117 or 135 hours.
- Each student takes 6 coursework modules (7 modules if no dissertation is submitted). Each module has 18 hours of lecture time, except Econometrics, which has 27 hours of teaching.
- The Preparatory Course consists of 48 hours of lecture time.
- There is an internal examination of the material covered in the preparatory course which is assessed on a pass/fail basis.
- There are some practice exams in January and students receive feedback on their performance.
- Students may choose to submit a 10,000-word dissertation at the end of July.
- The modules are examined by written papers of 1.5, 2, or 3 hours duration, or a combination of written/project work or project work alone.
- The department is consists of 39 academic staff, 10 postdoctoral researchers, 225 graduate students, and 500 undergraduates.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement
Academic Eligibility:
Students from UK universities:
- An undergraduate degree in economics, with at least a good 2.1 (average grade over 68%).
- The degree should include standard courses in intermediate level microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics (a business studies, accountancy or management degree or qualification does not provide an adequate background).
Students from North American institutions:
- An undergraduate degree in economics from a recognized institution.
- A GPA of at least 3.6 out of 4.0 or the equivalent is required.
Students from other countries:
- Students are strongly encouraged to include supporting information on their ranking within each academic year.
- Students must be qualified in IELTS or TOEFL and PTE to get admission in this program.
Indian Student Eligibility:
Indian students are eligible to apply if they complete one of the following eligibility criteria:
- The Board of Graduate Studies requires students from some countries to have completed a Master's degree before they can be considered for the MPhil at Cambridge.
- Students whose Bachelor's degree does not meet the entry requirements for the MPhil may be considered for the Advanced Diploma in Economics. The Diploma in Economics can be taken as the first year of a two-year Master's Programme, which means that providing their performance is satisfactory in the Diploma examinations then they would be allowed to continue to the MPhil in their second year.
- Students with a Bachelor's degree in Economics (3-year degree) from an Indian University are required to apply for the Diploma in Economics before continuing onto the MPhil in their second year.
- Completed a B.Sc/B.Com/B.A (3-4 year) degree from well-ranked institutions with an overall grade of 70% or CGPA 7.3+.
