- In partnership with Welsh Brew tea we will develop a health promoting blend of tea based on our research. InÊearlier studies we have identified varieties of teaÊcapable of killing the gut pathogen Clostridium difficile which is currently the principal cause of hospital acquired infection. DuringÊa second project entitled ÒApothecary BeeÕs, using the bee as a tool for drug discoveryÒ we identified a number of honey samples and plants which also possessed antibacterial and antiviral properties. By combining selected tea varieties, honey and plants identified from our studies, we will create a blend of teaÊwith the potential to be developed as a health promoting beverage.
- In addition to maximising theÊantimicrobial properties of the blendÊwe will also optmise its Salicylic acid content. Low dose aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) prevent heart attacks and strokes in high risk patient groups and has been proposed as an agent for cancer prevention and treatment.Ê
- In the UK, food is the major sourceÊof natural salicylates and it has been suggested that the relatively high rates of Cardiovascular disease and cancer inÊthe population isÊdue in part to a dietÊwhich lacks salicylates. Teas are an important source of dietary salicylate and thus as part ofÊthis project we willÊdevelop a blend in which the level of salicylates have been optimised to promote health.
- Finally, we will develop a marketing strategy which highlights the link with the universities research and maximises the chances of the product being a commercial success.
