Infrastructure supports our day-to-day living Ð just think about roads, bridges, schools, hospitals, and access to water and shelter. Without infrastructure, the world we live in would be very different Ð which makes the role of the civil engineering professional all the more important.

If you lack the appropriate formal qualifications to embark directly on the honours degree Ð or if you want to build your knowledge, skills and confidence first Ð taking a foundation year is an ideal choice.

ThisÊ route fromÊUniversity of Derby is aimed at anyone who has potential and ambition but who doesnÕt feel quite ready to join the BEng (Hons) programme right now. It is also a smart move if you have changed your mind about your career direction since you chose your A-levels or BTECs and need to improve your skills in a different subject area.

The foundation year will cover general concepts in areas such as engineering science, structural analysis and dynamics. You will also gain essential scholarship skills for technologists to support your progress at honours degree level.

Careers

When you graduate, you can look forward to wide-ranging career opportunities in civil engineering, including fields such as design, maintenance, asset management and construction.

You could, for example, go on to work for private companies which specialise in contracting or consulting, for local authorities and water companies, or for organisations such as Network Rail and the Highways Agency.

Alternatively you could choose to take your studies to the next level by embarking on a postgraduate course, such as our MSc Civil Engineering and Construction Management.
