The MA TESOL has been designed for practising language teachers who wish to further develop their existing career, or for those who wish to build a new career in teaching English as a foreign or second language. As well as contributing to professional development, it can enhance career prospects and pathways in public and private education, both in the UK and overseas. This programme provides opportunities for students to gain an in-depth understanding and application of current theories, research and practice in language learning and teaching. Students also pursue their own interests and/or professional needs in the preparation of their dissertation.

• Advanced knowledge of differing theoretical approaches to contemporary theories of second language acquisition

• Key methodologies and techniques in language teaching and learning

• An understanding of contemporary issues in TESOL

• Advanced understanding of the design of language tests and test evaluation

• The construction of effective language teaching materials

• Advanced knowledge of pedagogical English grammar

• Advanced knowledge of English phonetics and phonology

• An understanding of cross-linguistic variation and its relevance to language teaching

• A theoretical perspective on the use of ICT in language learning and teaching

• The ability to carry out a sustained piece of independent research on a relevant topic.
