The Film and Screen Media (with Television) course at Birkbeck, University of London encourages  to explore a wide variety of screen media in historical, sociological, aesthetic and anthropological terms and in a variety of cultural and national contexts. Students can personalise their MA studies and specialise in areas of film and screen media that match their intellectual interests and career goals, while a work placement option allows students to gain practical experience that may enhance their career prospects.

This course is unique in its combination of world-class, rigorous postgraduate study with creative and practical opportunities. Some of the option modules, including the two-month work placement module, could help you stand out in a competitive job market and further  career in the media, creative and cultural industries. The course will also prepare students for advanced research at MPhil/PhD level if they wish to continue studying.

This course has three other pathways: MA Film and Screen Media (with Study Abroad), MA Film and Screen Media (with Television) and MA Film and Screen Media with Film Programming and Curating.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement

Academic Eligibility:

  • Students must a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university to get admission to this program.
  • Students require a minimum GPA of 3 on a 4.0 scale for the program.
  •  Students should have a second-class honours degree (2:2) or above in a subject.
  • Students are required to complete a 700-1000-word written exercise by choosing a film or television programme which students have recently seen and explaining why found it innovative.

Indian Student Eligibility:

Indian students are eligible to apply if they meet one of the following eligibility criteria:

  • Students must complete a 4-year undergraduate degree with first class in a relevant field from a recognized institution.
  • Students need to submit minimum GRE exam scores for a better chance of admission.
  • Students are reviewed on their individual merits and your professional qualifications and/or relevant work experience will be taken into consideration positively. 
  • Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test to get admission to this program.

VISA & Work Study

If students are not from the UK and they do not already have residency here, students may need to apply for a visa.

The visa students apply for varies according to the length of students course:

  • Courses of more than six months' duration: Student visa
  • Courses of less than six months' duration: Standard Visitor visa

International students who require a Student visa should apply for their full-time courses as these qualify for Student visa sponsorship. If students are living in the UK on a Student visa, they will not be eligible to enrol as a student on Birkbeck's part-time courses (with the exception of some modules).


Career and Placement after Course

Careers and Employability

Graduates go in to careers in film and television companies, museums and galleries, arts administration, education, publishing and film criticism. Possible professions include arts administrator, museum or gallery curator and teacher. It is also possible to continue on to a PhD which offers employment opportunities in academia and other areas. This degree may also be useful in becoming a programme researcher or television/film/video producer.
