£20,555/Yr
This new course will prepare optometrists working in specialist practice (in the hospital or community setting) to provide advanced level primary eye care.
Emphasis is placed on modules accredited as part of the College of Optometrists' Professional Certificate (i.e. Glaucoma and Low Vision) and the Independent Prescribing Programme accredited by the General Optical Council (i.e. Principles of Therapeutics, Principles of Prescribing - exit for Additional Supply, Independent Prescribing and Learning in Practice via APEL).
The focus of the programme will be on management of patients (with other medical disciplines if appropriate) and the expansion of the optometrist's role in ocular therapeutics within the hospital and community specialist practice setting. Students will also develop theoretical, methodological and research skills to enhance the ability to critically evaluate research and the clinical evidence base.
Students will conduct a piece of rigorous research, which can form the basis for the development of effective service delivery in healthcare organisations.
City has a thriving research community undertaking pioneering projects in the vision science. We also have well established links with local centres of excellence such as Moorfields Eye Hospital and the Institute of Ophthalmology. The course gives students the opportunity to enhance optometric career prospects in the hospital or specialist community context through gaining both an academic qualification and professional qualifications with the College of Optometrists and General Optical Council.
