Tumkur University offers a Ph.D. degree across 15 academic departments in varied disciplines including Basic Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences, and Commerce & Business Studies. Research scholars can pursue the program in both Full-time and Part-time modes. The minimum duration for the Ph.D. program at Tumkur University is three years’ (four years’ for the part-time program) and six years’ at the max. only candidates who hold a Fellowship from the University/ State/ Central Government/ any other sources, or have qualified UGC-CSIR JRF/ SRF, or working in a sponsored project of the guide, are eligible for the full-time Ph.D. program at Tumkur University.

Tumkur University Ph.D. Eligibility Criteria

  • Candidates should hold a Master’s degree in a relevant subject or any other degree/ diploma of the University or any other recognized University/ Institution.
  • The candidates should also have a score of at least 55% or equivalent CGPA in the qualifying examination. SC/ ST/ Cat-I students are allowed to present a minimum score of 50% in the qualifying exam.

Tumkur University Ph.D Admission Criteria

  • Ph.D. admission is on the basis of entrance test scores and performance in Personal Interview.
  • The criteria that are reviewed during the Interview round are candidates’ potential to pursue the proposed research work, whether the same can be suitably undertaken at the University, and also whether the proposed research will add value to existing knowledge.
  • A consolidated merit list is released by the Doctoral Committee after the conclusion of the selection process, wherein entrance test score, interview performance, and merit in the qualifying examination are accorded equal weightage.
  • Based on the merit list, candidates are counseled before Research Guide Allotment. The allotment is done on the basis of vacancy with a guide, and total vacancies available in the discipline.
  • Post Allotment, candidates can apply for Provisional Registration of Ph.D.
  • Candidates who have qualified UGC/ CSIR (JRF)/ SLET/ K-SET/ GATE or hold teaching fellowships, do not have to appear for the entrance test. Such candidates will be able to join the Ph.D. program at any time during an academic year, subject to their qualifying the Interview round. They will be selected on the basis of Interview performance and merit in qualifying examination, both components being accorded equal weightage.

Ph.D. Entrance Exam

  • The medium of entrance examination is either Kannada or English.
  • The three hours’ exam comprises 100 MCQs, 60 of them subject-oriented while 40 related to Research Methodology.
  • The exam pattern and syllabus are similar to UGC/ CSIR NET while the syllabus is framed by the Board of Studies.
  • Candidates need to score at 50% in the entrance test (45% in the case of SC/ ST/CAT-I candidates) in order admission.

Tumkur University Ph.D Course Details

  • The Tumkur University Ph.D. programs require the scholars to complete the compulsory six months’ coursework.
  • Coursework syllabus is prepared and approved by the department-wise Board of Studies and includes a paper on Research Methodology and the specialization Paper, each leading to 5 credits.
  • Evaluation is a blend of continuous internal assessment and term-end theory examination, wherein the former carries 25% weightage and the latter 75%.
  • Candidates are required to score a minimum of 50% aggregate in Coursework examination, including continuous internal assessment, in order to pursue their program.
  • Continuous Internal Assessment for the Coursework includes:

Presentation 5%
Assignment on Review of Literature 5%
Internal Tests 10%

Please note that 75% of attendance is compulsory.

  • After the successful completion of the coursework, candidates need to submit the Ph.D. Research Proposal and present the same before the Doctoral Committee in a Pre-Registration Colloquium. Subject to the Doctoral Committee’s approval and recommendations, the candidates will be allowed to apply for Ph.D. Registration within six-months’ from successful completion of their Coursework.
  • Candidates are required to appear before the Doctoral Committee to update regarding the progress in their research and for further guidance.
  • In order to be allowed to submit a final thesis, candidates need to publish at least two research articles in a UGC approved journal and present two papers in a National Conference/ Seminar/ Workshop. Such articles and papers should be based on their respective research work.
  • Prior to submission of the Ph.D. thesis, candidates need to present the final synopsis of their research for approval by the Doctoral Committee. Upon approval, the scholars can finally submit their Ph.D. thesis for evaluation and granting of the degree.

FAQs

Ques. Is there any additional eligibility criteria / document requirement that international students need to fulfill in order to pursue the Ph.D. program at Tumkur University?

Ans. International students are required to fulfill the following additional requirements:

  • Submit a Certificate of Eligibility to prove the candidate’s eligibility for the program.
  • Obtain a valid Research Visa to be able to pursue research.

Ques. Do the research scholar have to undergo any other formality after the final submission of the Ph.D. thesis?

Ans. Yes, after the final thesis is submitted, the same is evaluated by a set of external examiners. Post receiving the approval of the external examiners, the scholars are invited to defend their research findings in an open Viva Voce before a panel consisting of the Doctoral Committee and the External Examiners.

Ques. Is a Ph.D. scholar allowed to change the title of research work or change the assigned Guide?

Ans. In order to change the title of their research work/ Ph.D. thesis, candidates need to submit an application along with 10 copies of revised Synopsis and Changed Title to the Registrar through the concerned Guide and HOD after paying the applicable fee.

Change of Guide is not permissible generally. However, exceptional circumstances like the following can be taken into consideration to allow change of Research Guide:

  • The demise/ disability/ other medical conditions of the Guide in question, or
  • Legal procedures taken against the Guide by the University, or
  • A written complaint of conflict between the scholar and the Guide

Ques. What will happen if I cannot submit my Ph.D. thesis within the regulation six years?

Ans. As per university regulations, the Ph.D. thesis has to be submitted with six years of registration. In case a candidate fails to do so, a request for an extension of Registration for a maximum period of one year can be made through the Chairperson of the Department, on the recommendation of the Guide. The extension request should be made along with the prescribed fee payment.

Failure to honor the extension and non-submission of the thesis within the set time-frame can lead to the candidate’s registration being canceled.
