Madras University Ph.D. Eligibility Criteria
In order to be eligible for PhD admission at Madras University, candidates must fulfill the following requirements:
- Master’s Degree in Arts, Sciences, Fine Arts, Languages, Commerce, Education, Management Science, Law, Engineering, Technology, Architecture and Medicine including the Degree of Doctor of Medicine (M.D. or M.R.C.P), or Master of Surgery (M.S. or F.R.C.S./M.R.C.S.), Indian Medicine, Veterinary Science, M.Pharm. and Agriculture from any recognized university.
- M.B.B.S. Degree with two years of Senior House Surgeons /Special training or equivalent recognized by the Medical Council of India or competent authority.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Veterinary Science, Ayurveda, Siddha, Homeopathy, Unani Medicines, etc., with two years Senior House Surgeons/equivalent special training in related disciplines of two years duration.
- ACA, FCA, AICWAI, ACSI qualifications of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India, and Institute of Company Secretaries of India provided the candidates have secured:
- One of the above qualifications after the lapse of at least two years after obtaining a UG degree from any recognized university.
- A Miminum of 55% marks in the aggregate in the qualifying degree examination.
- Research fellows/Research Assistants/Technical Assistants/Project Fellows/Project Assistants/Training Officers in extension departments approved by the University, appointed in the research projects funded by recognized agencies/Government are also eligible to register for Ph.D. on a full-time basis in the same department provided they satisfy the eligibility criteria laid above.
Eligibility for Part-time Ph.D. (Internal)
Candidate with any of the degrees required for full-time PhD program and fulfills any of the below-mentioned criteria is eligible for applying to Part-time Ph.D program:
- A teacher working in the Department of the University or in an affiliated College, Higher Secondary School or High School or Polytechnic within the territorial jurisdiction of the University.
- Teacher of affiliated college with NET/SLET qualification or M.Phil. Degree with one year of teaching experience after M. Phil degree and Teachers of Higher Secondary Schools/High Schools and Polytechnic with two years of experience after the qualifying degree.
- Employed other than as a teacher in a permanent job within the territorial jurisdiction of the University with a minimum of Four Years of total working experience, after the qualifying degree.
- Research Assistant/Technical Assistant appointed on a permanent basis by the University.
- Candidate with M.L. Degree practicing as an advocate in any Court of Law or serving as a Legal Advisor to/in a registered firm/institution within the territorial jurisdiction of the University with a minimum of Four Years of total working experience after qualifying degree.
- Teacher of affiliated colleges in the following disciplines, with one year of teaching experience without M.Phil or SLET/NET:

Eligibility for Part-time Ph.D. (External)
Applicants with any of the qualifications from a recognized university, and working as a teacher, scientist in National/State level institutions, Universities, Research and Development (R&D) Centres/Laboratories and institutions outside the territorial jurisdiction of this University (India/Abroad) can apply for part-time basis two years after their qualifying degree, if they are permitted by their organization to pursue research while continuing their employment.
A supervisor/doctoral committee would prescribe course work, examination, and research work, which the candidate has to complete under a Supervisor for a minimum of Six Months.
Apart from supervisor from the university, a supervisor of Ph.D. program will be appointed from the institute of the candidate's employment. If such a supervisor is not available, Head of the institution shall take its place.
Madras University Ph.D. Admission Process
The university conducts separate entrance examinations for admission to its research programs. The test is of objective type and consists of questions from research aptitude and concerned subject to which a candidate has applied for. The duration of the test is of two hours. The merit list is prepared on the basis of marks scored in the entrance examination and qualifying examination (weightage given to each is 50:50 respectively).
Admission to PhD courses is based on performance in entrance examination and qualifying degree. Equal amount of weightage is being given to each criteria. The entrance test of 50 marks will be conducted by the respective departments of the University. The entrance test will have two sections as given below:

A candidate must secure a minimum of 25 marks out of 50 marks in the entrance test. Candidates who have been granted a fellowship by UGC-CSIR etc. or Project Fellows appointed in major Research Projects by funding agencies or Teachers working in affiliated colleges are exempted from appearing in the written test.
Madras University Ph.D. Application Process
The application form along with the prospectus for Ph.D. courses is available for download on the official website. The candidate is required to download the application form and submit the duly filled-in form at the corresponding department of the university, where they wish to undergo their research before the last date. The candidate must also submit a demand draft of INR 500 from any nationalized bank, drawn in favor of “The Registrar, University of Madras, Chepauk, Chennai 600005”. SC/ST candidates are exempted from paying the application fee.
The candidate also needs to submit certain documents along with the application form to the concerned department. The list of documents is given below:
- Birth Certificate / S.S.L.C. Certificate
- Community Certificate
- 10th std, HSC/UG/PG/M.Phil. Mark Statements and Convocation Certificates
- Approval of qualification/appointment of teachers by the University of Madras
- Minutes of the Departmental Selection Committee recommending the candidate to do Ph.D. program.
- A Service Certificate and No Objection Certificate in original from the Head of the Institution where the candidate is employed indicating the date of appointment. (for Part-Time candidates)
- A copy of the appointment order issued by appointing authority. (for Part-Time candidates)
- A certificate from the Director of Technical Education / District Educational Officer stating that the polytechnics / Higher Secondary / High School where the teacher is employed has been recognized by the government. (for Part-Time candidates)
