Visva Bharati University was founded by the first non-European Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Thakur (popularly known as Tagore) in 1921. Visva-Bharati is a pilgrimage for education and culture. It reflects the Tagorean ethos of making a complete human being. Visva Bharati University offers various Under Graduate (UG), Post Graduate (PG), M.Phil. and Ph.D. courses under various specialisations giving the students a pool of options for undertaking higher studies. There is a total of 9 departments offering UG, PG, M.Phil. and P.hD courses including Patha Bhavan for school education. The University also provides for certain specific courses specially designed for the foreign students. The admission procedure for all the UG and PG courses generally starts from May and ends in the third week of June. Admission for most of the courses is done based on the merit of the students.

The Viswa Bharati University offers 8 UG courses under a variety of specialisations for students who have cleared their 10+2 examination. All the BA courses are offered under honours subjects except for one pass course i.e. Vocational Functional Hindi. The University also offers BA in foreign languages viz. Tibetan, Chinese, Persian and Japanese. Such courses are for a period of 4 years including 1-year preparatory course. The rest of the BA courses are for a period of 3 years. The University also offers B.Fine Arts course of 5 years including 2 preparatory years.
According to Visva Bharati University Admission Criteria, the admission to UG courses is based on the merit of the student considering their 10+2 examination results.
