According to a recent report published by SEVIS (Students and Exchange Visitor Information System), Asia comprises around 71.9% of the total international student population in 2021. Two of the major countries of origin for international students are India and China. Students from India and China comprise nearly half (47%) of the total foreign students in US.

The main function of SEVIS is to maintain a record of the total number of active F-1 and M-1 visas. As per this report, currently, there is a total of 1,236,748 active F-1 and M-1 visas in the US, which is 2% less than the total number of Visas in 2020.
As per a report published by the US Department of Homeland Security, Indians received the maximum number of H-1B visas in 2021.US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) sanctioned around 4.07 lakh H-1B in 2021.
Indians were allotted around 74.1% of the total Visas in 2021, whereas around 74.9% of visas were approved in 2020. Compared to this, only 50,328 individuals from China were allotted visas in 2021 comprising 12.4% of the total number of allotted visas. In 2020, only 51,597 Chinese individuals were granted visas accounting for 12.1% of the total.

The Parent Agency of SEVIS, US Citizenship and Immigration Services has stated that various restrictions due to Covid-19 continue to negatively impact the number of international students in the US.
Main Highlights
As per the reports, there were 25,391 more students from India whereas there are around 33,569 fewer Chinese students in the USA in 2021 compared to 2021. There is an increase of 12% in the number of Indian students and a drop of 8% in the number of Chinese students. 37% of the Indian students are female.

In 2021, there were around 348,992 students from China, 232,851 students from India, 58,787 from South Korea, 37,453 pupils from Canada, 33,552 pupils from Brazil, 29,597 from Vietnam, 28,600 students from Saudi Arabia, 25,406 pupils from Taiwan, 20,144 students from Japan and 19,680 pupils from Mexico.
The report also stated that 92% of the active visa holders applied for master’s, doctorate, bachelor's, or associate degree programs in the US. There was also an increase in the total number of higher degree programs pursued by International students which grew from 1,121,981 in 2020 to 1,142,352 in 2021.
The number of exchange students dropped from 256,994 in 2020 to 240,479 in 2021. SEVP authorized only around 8,038 Universities to enroll foreign students compared to 8,389 in 2020.
