Sociology is the systematic study of social life and social transformation.

The department at Mount Holyoke offers fundamental classes in social theory and research methods as well as classes on specific topics including criminology, education, gender, family, race and ethnicity, social inequality, media, art and culture.

Majors learn how to use theories and methods to challenge assumptions and test hypotheses. Along with developing advanced research skills, students have opportunities for fieldwork, internships, and independent study.

Sociology provides a solid base for a range of careers, including education, international affairs, academia, law, medicine, journalism, public administration, public health, social work and a wide variety of social research occupations, including polling, statistical consulting, and survey work.
