The courses we offer cover most fields of philosophical inquiry and range from introductory surveys suitable for all students to advanced seminars for students majoring in philosophy or related disciplines. Many of our courses satisfy the GER7 (Religious, Social, and Philosophical Thought), several others satisfy the GER4A (History and Culture in the European Tradition), and nearly all of them will help you to hone your writing skills. Philosophy lies at the very heart of a sound liberal arts education, and it provides an especially strong foundation for professions in which analysis and argumentation are particularly advantageous, such as law.
A student whose aim is to use a major in philosophy as a basis for a liberal education may take the minimum major requirement of 30 hours in the department. Those who wish to prepare for graduate study in philosophy or in a related discipline will normally take more than this required minimum. A program for each major will be developed through consultation with a member of the philosophy faculty acting as a major advisor.
To declare a major in Philosophy, take the Major Declaration form to the faculty member in the Department whom you would like to choose as your advisor. That professor can help you complete the course plan and will sign the form as your advisor when it is completed. The form should be submitted to the Registrar's Office.
