Candidates who meet the requirements for the major will complete the program below in nine terms, including completion of the pre-professional term (8th term) and Student Teaching (9th term). No other courses may be taken during the Student Teaching term. Candidates must also meet all criteria for admission into, and completion of, the Teacher Education Program (see above), including the required admission Written Assessment and the Exit Portfolio.

Since Berea College is a liberal arts college, all students engage in courses and experiences in general studies. These courses are especially important for those who wish to teach because they develop teachers? general knowledge of the world, enhance their ability to make connections across disciplines, strengthen their capacity to look at questions from multiple perspectives, and develop the habits of critical, creative, and reflective inquiry.

Academic Requirements:

  • Applicants must submit official transcripts of secondary school and post secondary school
  • Submit an essay of 2-5 pages
  • Submit two teacher recommendation forms
  • Submitting SAT/ACT score is optional
  • Submit English Proficiency Test scores

English Language Requirements:

  • TOEFL: minimum 68 in iBT; 520 in PBT; 190 in CBT
  • IELTS: minimum 6.0 
  • Duolingo: minimum 95
  • PTE: minimum 58
