- The Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Social Studies Education is intended for prospective middle and high school social studies teachers and fulfills academic requirements for an initial teacher license in Massachusetts, which has reciprocity with most other states. Qualified undergraduates in Social Studies Education may also seek dual degrees with the College of Arts & Sciences through the Boston University Dual Degree Program.
- Mentored field experiences begin with a one-day-a-week school placement in freshman year, include pre-practicum experiences in schools, and culminate with full-time student teaching in a social studies classroom during senior year, affording preservice teachers the opportunity to design and implement inquiry-based, content-rich units of study, and to assess students’ learning.
- Careful planning allows students to combine this program with special education or English as a second language (see below for curriculum requirements). Earning a teaching license in these or other areas may require credits beyond the minimum undergraduate degree requirements.
