The programs also allow students to qualify for New York State licensure needed for practice in outside educational settings. Students in the MA program in speech-language pathology also can qualify for New York State certification for teachers of students with speech-language disabilities.

The University at Buffalo Department of Communicative Disorders and Sciences teaches comprehensive programs leading to bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees.  

The mission of the Department of Communicative Disorders and Sciences is to engage in basic and translational research in the areas of human communication processes and its disorders, train doctoral students to conduct basic as well as clinical research in speech, language and hearing sciences and disorders, and to leverage our programs to educate our undergraduate and graduate students (MA, AUD) to become a new generation of scientist-practitioners in our field.  We are also dedicated to providing state-of-the-science clinical services to the Western New York community and to provide educational outreach through clinics, workshops and screenings. In summary, our mission is to pursue excellence in academic, scholarly, and clinical activities, which is in keeping with the CAS and University missions.
