- The physics department uses the Preliminary Examination as its comprehensive exam.
- The test is given every year in the fall before the start of classes and covers senior undergraduate and first-year graduate level physics.
- Normally students take the Preliminary Exam at the beginning of their second year.
- Students who do not pass on the first attempt may retake the exam the following year.
- The department usually does not guarantee funding for Master's students.
- Students who wish to continue for a Ph.D. at UC Davis should apply directly to the Ph.D. Program.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement
Academic Eligibility:
- A minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent) from the institution where students have earned or will earn their bachelor's degree.
- Successful applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree or the equivalent that is comparable to a degree.
- Applicants whose native language or the language of instruction is not English must submit TOEFL or IELTS scores.
- Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores
- The GRE score requirement for the 2021-2022 admission cycle has been waived for all students.

- 4 year Bachelor's Degree, a 3 year Bachelor's Degree with a Post Graduate Diploma or Master's Degree, or a higher degree.
