- Software engineering is the area within computer science that is concerned with the theoretical and practical aspects of the detailed design, building, testing, modification, optimization, and maintenance of large, high quality, software systems for a wide range of applications across society. Software engineers analyze users? needs and work as part of a core team to design, create, and implement high quality and cost effective new software, computer applications, and utility programs.
