Students will study established and emerging media to gain the skills necessary to compete effectively in broadcast, print and digital media. Students who choose the News & Media Studies (BS) degree will learn the basics of creating and distributing messages in media. The interdisciplinary major provides students with a broad understanding of modern communication through offerings both inside and outside the Bob Schieffer College of Communication.
- The Department of Journalism?s mission is to prepare students for all facets of the news industry.
- Students interested in working as journalists can gain experience in the classroom as well as working on one of our news platforms.
- Those more interested in the business side of the media can build a degree plan that allows them to understand journalism?s role in society.
- Students can explore general reporting at tcu360.com, entertainment writing and sports writing for The Skiff, political news reporting and writing for politifrog.com or community news at our hyper-local site, the109.org.
- Journalism majors cover the TCU community and Fort Worth. Student journalists are on the sidelines and in the press box at sporting events, both at home, on the road and bowl games.
- Student media also offers opportunities to learn design, produce podcasts, and video packages. Our news laboratory is equipped with video editing software, design software as well as still and video cameras.
- Students also have opportunities to design and sell advertising that supports student media.
- In the classroom, students learn writing and reporting skills as well as how to make ethical decisions. Students participate in all aspects of creating and producing a newscast or sportscast.
- Students also have opportunities to earn valuable internship experience in the fifth largest media market. Juniors and seniors are also eligible to apply for the Washington D.C. internship program, which places students for semester-long internships in the nation?s capital.
