The BSEE degree is the usual degree taken by those students planning a career in engineering practice. The BSEE requires more hours and greater depth than the BA degree; however, it still provides considerable flexibility and can reduce the time required to become a licensed professional engineer. In the final year, BSEE students undertake a capstone design project.
Eligibility & Entry Requirement
Academic Eligibility:
- Students must have an official secondary school transcript to get admission.
- Students are required to maintain at least a 3.0 overall GPA.
Language Requirments:
- Students whose official language is not English are required to submit IELTS or TOEFL scores.
- Students are required to submit an SAT or ACT score to be considered for admission.
International students who currently or will hold a degree from an institution where English is the primary language of instruction, do not need to submit a TOEFL or IELTS score report.

VISA & Work Study
VISA
- Typically degree-seeking international students will come to study on an F-1 student visa and exchange students on a J-1 Exchange Visitor visa. To apply for an F-1 or J-1 visa, the student will need an I-20 or DS-2019 immigration documents, respectively. Occasionally international students may study other visa classifications, depending on their situation, so please check with an OISS advisor if students plan to stay on current visa classification.
- Please keep in mind that all international students regardless of visa type are required to attend the international orientation and to check in with OISS at the start of their program at Rice University.
- Once admitted, all new international students must complete their international student profile in the OISS Portal, regardless of their current or prospective immigration status.
