  • The Department of Music offers graduate degrees in Western classical music, with concentrations in composition and performance, and a specialized undergraduate program in music education. 
  • The department offers two specializations for the MA degree in the fields of composition and composition for visual media. 
  • Students select their area of specialization in the second or third quarter of their first year of study.
  • For the composition specialization, a reading knowledge of one foreign language is required. Students must select from French, German, Italian, or Spanish. 
  • Students are required to complete 48 units (normally 14 courses) of which 44 units (normally 13 courses) must be at the 200 level.
  • For the composition for visual media specialization, there is no foreign language requirement.
  • Students are required to complete 54 units (normally 13 courses), of which 38 units (normally nine courses) must be at the 200 level. 
  • After completing 1-year of course work and 3 quarters of performance/conducting instruction, students must submit the capstone program.
  • The student-faculty ratio of the program is 4:1.
  • Students take a minimum of 6 quarters and a maximum of 9 quarters to complete this program.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement

Academic Eligibility:

  • Students must complete a bachelor's degree or equivalent in Music from a recognized institution.
  • A GPA of 3.0 out of 4.0 (B grade) is required in the last two years of undergraduate coursework.
  • Students study in other fields are also accepted if they have taken the musical training and musicianship which is necessary to pursue graduate work.
  • The submission of GRE scores is not required for this program.

Indian Student Eligibility:

Indian students are eligible to apply if they meet one of the following eligibility criteria:

  • Students must complete a 4-year undergraduate degree with first class in a relevant field from a recognized institution
  • Or, students completed a master's degree with first-class in a relevant field from a recognized institution.

Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test to get admission to this program.
