- Psychologists try to determine what humans and other organisms do and think and the reasons for their behavior. They learn about these things through interviews, tests, surveys, and controlled experiments; therefore, they must combine knowledge in theory, research methods, and applied skills.
- Unlike some schools, Miami's program gives students a foundation in all the major areas of psychology: psychobiology, cognition and perception, development, psychopathology/personality, and social psychology.
- Psychology majors at Miami receive sound liberal arts training, which is good preparation for many different careers or areas of graduate study. The core curriculum surveys the methods and findings of a variety of areas in psychology.
- Independent study is another way of gearing the psychology major to student's own interests, and our faculty will guide them in their readings and research projects. For example, undergraduates have traced biochemical pathways, evaluated the ways people form impressions due to the physical attractiveness of others, and analyzed therapies for dealing with phobias.
- This program provides excellent preparation for students planning to pursue graduate study in psychology. Outstanding students are encouraged to enroll in the departmental honors program.
