  • The Computer Science and Software Engineering Department offers a master's degree and a combined bachelor's/masters degree program. The mission of the Master of Science in Computer Science program is to prepare students for computing professions that require research, invention, and advanced or specialized knowledge. This includes the possible pursuit of a Ph.D. in computer science.
  • Students (who are expected to hold a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a closely related field) shall complete and document work on independent research with a faculty advisor and study advanced topics in computer science. The advanced coursework and experience in research and invention prepare students for work at the cutting edge of computer science.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement

Academic Eligibility:

  • Applicant's GRE general test scores submitted directly to Miami University, and an unofficial PDF copy of their score sheets for the application. Note: GRE test scores are not required for Miami undergraduate students applying for admission into the combined program or Miami alumni applying for direct admission into the MSCS program.
  • Applicants for admission into the MSCS program should hold at least the equivalent of a minor in Computer Science or Software Engineering.
  • Applicants hold a bachelor's degree in one of these fields or another that is closely related.
  • Specifically, successful applicants to our program should have mastered the following undergraduate topics:

    • Imperative and/or functional programming, Object-oriented programming, Basic algorithms and/or complexity, Computer organization and architecture, Concurrent and/or parallel programming, Software development methods and tools, Differential and integral calculus, Probability and Statistics, Discrete mathematics, or linear algebra.
  • Undergraduate GPA: Equivalent of at least 3.00 on a 4.00 scale

Indian Eligibility:

Indian students are eligible to apply if they meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • International students hailing from non-English speaking countries must submit proof of English proficiency. Students may provide score reports of TOEFL/IELTS/… or any equivalent test with at least a minimum score as per program guidelines to prove English proficiency.
  • In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Miami is accepting the Duolingo English Test for the 2021-2022 application cycle as an alternative to the TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE test. Miami’s Duolingo English Test scores must include the subscores. If students took the test prior to July 15, 2019, they will need to retake the test.
