They are designed to equip beginningresearchers with the intellectual background and methodological tools they need to conduct research focused on but not limited to questions focused on issues of class, race, ethnicity, and gender in educational policy and practice in elementary, secondary, and post-secondary settings and/or in family, community, and alternative educational contexts.

Learning Outcomes

• Students will acquire an understanding of theoretical frameworks for examining issues related to questions about diversity, equity, and social justice in formal and informal educational settings.
• Students will develop a thorough knowledge of research that examines the connections between institutional/social structures and educational success and failure.
• Students will acquire knowledge of the methodological issues related to conducting original research that addresses questions about the relationship between class, race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality in education.
• Students will complete an original piece of research that demonstrates interdisciplinary and multi-racial approaches to the examination of educational and social inequalities and of approaches to counter them.
• M.A. students will demonstrate mastery of a foreign language.
