Our professors insist on high standards so that our students can develop and graduate with skills that will enable them to excel in a myriad of future endeavors.
Our undergraduate student body includes more than two hundred History majors and more than a hundred minors, some taking courses in the classroom and others pursuing an education online. Undergraduates majoring in History select from among three emphases, American/Latin American, European/Asian/African, and Public History. Troy University also offers a History Education major for students seeking a career in secondary education. For the many students intrigued with history but determined to major in another discipline, the Department includes a popular History Minor. Many of Troy’s history students participate in the school’s History Clubs and in its chapters of the Phi Alpha Theta History Honors Society, which sponsors and annually publishes the Alexandrian, a journal of student publications in history.
Troy’s history professors are qualified scholars committed to publishing in their fields and imparting their expertise to students taking their classes. They publish meaningful articles in prestigious journals and provide editing services and expertise for them, too. Our faculty has produced books published by the world’s best academic presses, including Cambridge University Press, Ohio State University Press, Praeger, University of Alabama Press, and University Press of Kansas.
The faculty is dedicated to delivering to our students an innovative pedagogy of the past that is relevant to the present. Our professors employ interactive teaching methodologies including interdisciplinary approaches. They strive to include students in ever more interactive approaches including hybrid classes.
Among many other public events in which the Department participates, we annually host the McPherson-Mitchell Lecture on Southern History at the Troy campus. Moreover, in 2002, Dothan Campus created The Wiregrass Archives to identify, preserve, and make available to researchers the records and papers of enduring value that document the history and development of the Wiregrass region of Alabama, Georgia, and Florida. Our faculty has also been widely involved with student organizations such as the International Student Cultural Organization (ISCO), NAACP, Philosophy Society, History Club, and Phi Alpha Theta.
