Histotechnologists perform a variety of diagnostic and research procedures in the anatomic sciences. Basic histologic techniques involve the processing and staining of tissue specimens that have been removed from humans or animals by biopsy or autopsy.
Advanced techniques involve the use of the electron microscope, immunofluorescence microscopy, autoradiography, cytogenetics and medical photography.
Students may be accepted into the histotechnology specialization after completing the required science, mathematics and clinical laboratory science courses. University general education requirements must also be met. The senior year consists of a 12-month internship at William Beaumont Hospital School of Histotechnology.
