- The Ph.D. program offers three areas of study: British and American literatures, including criticism and theory; Rhetoric and Writing; and an interdisciplinary Concentration in Medieval Studies. The Ph.D. in English requires 51 credit hours of course work; a foreign language requirement; successful completion of comprehensive exams in 3 fields; and a Ph.D. dissertation. All applicants must have at least a 3.0 GPA in English or in a cognate discipline. Our graduate admissions committee evaluates all applications holistically, giving weight to the letter of intent, writing samples, letters of recommendation, GRE scores, and GPA. Admission to all programs is competitive.
