- The Nuclear Engineering undergraduate program at the University of New Mexico gives the student broad training in the fundamentals of mathematics, physics, chemistry and engineering, followed by professional specialty course work involving radiation interaction with matter, radiation transport, radiation detection and protection, nuclear reactor theory and safety, thermal hydraulics and nuclear systems design. Students also select technical electives that allow them to explore in-depth areas of interest in nuclear engineering.
- Among the exciting research areas, UNM nuclear engineering professors are studying what happens to the cooling system of a nuclear reactor under severe accident conditions.
- Collaborations with national laboratories focus on a variety of areas, including nuclear criticality safety, radiation transport, reactor theory, space nuclear power, and probabilistic risk assessment.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement
The Ph.D. in Engineering with an emphasis in Nuclear Engineering requires 48 credit hours of coursework and 18 hours of dissertation. Students take the departmental core courses (listed below) and choose additional courses to meet the 48-hour requirement in consultation with their faculty advisor.
Core courses include:
- NE 501: Graduate Seminar (1 cr. required every semester; up to 3 credits may be applied toward the MS)
- NE 525: Methods of Analysis in Nuclear, Chemical and Biological Engineering (3 cr)
- NE 410: Nuclear Reactor Theory I (required only for students who do not have a background in nuclear reactor theory)
Students who already possess a Master’s Degree in Nuclear Engineering may, with the permission of their faculty advisor and NE advisor, apply up to 24 hours of Master’s level coursework (taken at UNM or elsewhere) to the 48 credit hour requirements.
Ph.D. students must pass a written Comprehensive Exam.
