Physics provides an in-depth understanding of how the physical world works. It underlies all other basic sciences and is the basis for much of technology because it is concerned with the most fundamental aspects of matter and energy as well as the laws that govern their interactions.

Physics is a versatile major. Many doors are open to physics majors, as the skills and experiences a student gains will be transferable to many other possible careers, including biophysics, education, engineering, journalism, management, medicine, and patent law. Other students choose physics as preparation towards a career as a professional physicist or a science educator.

There are major research programs in condensed matter physics, elementary particle physics, nuclear physics, astrophysics and astronomy, and mathematical physics.

At Iowa State, you also have the unique opportunity to major in physics and focus your studies in astronomy or astrophysics.
