VISA & Work Study
VISA
- An F-1 visa is a type of non-immigrant visa which allows individuals to study in the United States. A student who wishes to enter the US for studies on an F-1 visa will need to submit appropriate documentation in order to be issued a Form I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility) by UT. An F-1 visa can only be issued by a US consulate or embassy abroad.
- The University of Texas at Austin usually requests H-1B nonimmigrant status for individuals it hopes to bring to the U.S. temporarily to perform services in a specialty occupation. This is an occupation that requires theoretical and practical application of a body of highly specialized knowledge. In this case, UT is the petitioner and the individual it hopes to bring is the beneficiary.
Work Study
- Working off-campus is not permitted without specific permission from Texas Global or from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
- F-1 students may work up to 20 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters. Full-time employment (21+ hours per week) is allowed only during vacation periods for enrolled and continuing students. No special permission is necessary, however, a valid I-20 issued by The University of Texas at Austin is required. If students will graduate, then students are only eligible to work on campus until the graduation date of the final semester.
