  • McMaster University offers Master of Engineering in Design for a duration of 1 year with an additional 4-month co-op.
  • It is an on-campus program offered on a full-time basis.
  • A community of students, experts, faculty, and industry partners, the Engineering Design program at McMaster centered around experiential, cooperative, and interdisciplinary learning, creativity, and solving real-world problems.
  • The program curriculum has three main components:
    • Professional Development courses that will enable graduates to deal with complex situations in the work environment, to lead teams, and to manage projects.
    • Courses Relevant to the selected stream: some courses are mandatory for a given stream while others are elective.
    • An M.Eng project that requires a synthesis of knowledge from various disciplines.
  • As a student in the M.Eng Design program, they will gain experience working with a variety of rapid prototyping and design tools. 
  • Full-time students are expected to complete the program in 16 months.The actual duration of studies may be shorter (not less than 12 months) or longer (not more than 24 months), for students who work faster or slower.
  • This program is open to any applicants with a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths) degree.
  • The student-faculty ratio of the program is 16:1.
  • The program requires completion of 24 units in courses along with a major design project equivalent to 6 units.
  • The required courses of the program are:
    • ​Design Thinking (3 units)
    • Innovation Studio (3 units)
    • Leadership for Innovation (3 units)
    • MEng Project in Engineering Design, Part I (3 units)
    • MEng Project in Engineering Design, Part II  (3 units)
  • Students also get the facilities to work in Early design stages prototyping lab, Rapid Prototyping lab, Virtual Reality Lab, CAD/CAM computing network, and Prototyping lab for smart systems.
  • Job opportunities after MEng in Design are Design Engineer, Product Engineer, etc and the average salary goes up to 54,000 USD.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement

Academic Eligibility:

  • Students must hold a  four-year engineering undergraduate degree or equivalent from a recognized university.
  • Students must have a B- minimum average grade (equivalent to a McMaster 7.0 GPA out of 12) in the final year in all courses in the discipline, or relating to the discipline, in which the applicant proposes to do graduate work.
  • Students with a degree in Science, Technology, or Mathematics will also be considered.

Indian Student Eligibility:

Indian students are eligible to apply if they meet one of the following eligibility criteria:

  • Completed a 4-year UG degree with first class in a relevant field from a recognized institution.
  • Or, completed a 3-year UG degree in a relevant field from a recognized institution.

Submission of GRE scores is not compulsory for this program, however, if students have given the GRE exam then it is recommended to submit the scores (minimum 300) for a better chance of admission.

Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test.

  • Online application form and fees: Students have to fill the online form and submit the application fees. 
  • CV/Resume: Outline of academic achievements and/or awards, publications, relevant work, and/or volunteer experience.
  • Two Academic or Professional References: Referees (Teachers, guidance counselors, or Professors) should comment on academics and that references should submit along with the application system.
  • Personal Statement: It should include a brief overview of themselves, strengths, and any work experience and/or education that students have.
  • Transcripts: Students have to submit transcripts from all universities/colleges attended, World Education Services Assessments, and English Language Proficiency test scores.
  • Statement of Intent: Reasons or intentions for pursuing studies in this program, including a description of prior experience.
