IISc Bangalore accepts students under 5 levels as regular students or researchers.
Bachelor of Science (Research) Programme:
This is a four-year UG Research Programme in Science designed especially to offer specialization in a science subject. All students take core courses in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Engineering, and Humanities in the first 3 semesters and later choose electives of their choice. In the fourth year, there is a research-based project under the guidance of a faculty. There are three national-level exams for this program
Masters Course:
Integrated Ph.D.:
This program is for those Bachelors who are inclined towards research and want to save time by skipping Masters. The students of this branch pursue advanced research in areas such as Biological, Chemical, Physical, and Mathematical Sciences leading to a Ph.D. degree. Exams accepted for this program are JAM and JEST
Ph.D.:
Admission to the Ph.D. program at IISc Bangalore is done on the basis of four national exams; GATE, UGC NET, UGC CSIR, and INSPIRE.
External Ph.D.:
This program does not require any kind of exam and is only for
In addition to the above 5 levels, you can also apply directly to potential faculties for the position of Post Doc, Research Assistant, or Internship.
KVPY (SA, SX and SB) is the easiest mode of securing admission into IISc Bangalore for UG studies. It is possible to get a seat even with an ordinary rank in the exam. But it is mandatory to register for the admissions beginning February. The other modes are JEE Mains, JEE Advanced and NEET. However, the cutoff ranks for these exams are high. With time, the cutoff ranks for KVPY are also getting higher.
Well, getting a Ph.D. from IISc is indeed difficult. In my opinion, the true meaning of a Ph.D. is investing your entire efforts, time, and knowledge in one specific region. In India though, Ph.D. is just considered a degree one can achieve by publishing some paper in some conference or journal. The quality of these papers is poor and substandard bringing down the sort of the degree.
However, IISc being a prestigious institute has managed to maintain the dignity and credibility of the degree so far. You need to prepare yourself for committing to hard work and high-level dedication. Know that your next 5-6 years will be spent proving and disproving every hypothesis possible and conducting infinite experiments.
As a Ph.D. student, you will be publishing a few journals in top international forums and also writing your own thesis, which will culminate your entire work and present it before other researchers and professors of the institute. You will then be assessed thoroughly. Only after proving your point strongly and convincing them will you be able to get the degree.
During this whole time, you will face many struggles dealing with your PI and securing funds for your research work. But trust me the result will be worth the effort!
Being a GE candidate makes every option exponentially harder. Here are some of the exams with their cutoffs (probable) to secure admission to IISc Bangalore for your UG program-
Ultimately though, the JEE Mains cutoff depends on the number of remaining seats after the KVPY admissions have been processed and verified.
These are the probable marks & ranks in various exams that are required for your admission into IISc Bangalore.
Also, prepare well if you are called for an interview. The UG program at IISER Pune, Kolkata, and Mohali are at par with the ones offered at IISc Bangalore. IISc Bangalore, however, has years of research experience behind it.
Yes, you can get admission to IISc through a NEET UG score. In IISc Bangalore, admissions are done on the basis of national-level exam scores or institute-based entrance exams. For the BSc program, students are shortlisted on the basis of 4 exams
Shortlisting for the BTech in Mathematics and Computing is done on the basis of JEE Advanced scores only. The cutoff for the MNC is 757 and the cutoff for BSc courses is given below
KVPY |
SA- 241; SX- 41; SB- 01 |
JEE Main |
241-353 |
JEE Advanced |
241-353 |
NEET |
241-353 |
The NEET UG cutoff for getting into IISc Bangalore is 241-353
In IISc Bangalore, for certain programs, only the GATE scores are taken into consideration. For example- M.Tech (course) in CSA and SSA streams.
In the above-mentioned programs, you have to secure the top 50-100 rank in the GATE CS examination.
For M.Tech in some streams, and M.Tech (Research) and Ph.D. programs, IISc Bangalore uses the GATE score simply as a cutoff. The selection is done based on the written test and subsequent interview. The GATE cutoff for an interview call is relatively low. This is done with the idea that a good student who had a bad exam can still perform extremely well during the interview. For M.Tech/ Ph.D. CS, this rank is equal to the top 500-1000 ranks(for those who apply), but it can go to 200 for other streams.
Your GATE scores and GPA during graduation become mostly irrelevant once you get called by IISc Bangalore for an interview. They can only work to make the interviewer biased toward/against you, this won’t happen unless you have significantly high or low scores respectively. What matters for your selection is if you can impress the interviewers with your knowledge of the topic(s) that you want to study/research.
Thus, if you go for a course at IISc Bangalore which makes selections through a written test and an interview, make sure to study your topic well and answer the interviewers with confidence.
