The Indian Institute of Handloom Technology (IIHT Salem) is a leading government institute that functions directly under the Development Commissioner for Handlooms, under the Ministry of Textiles (Govt. of India). At present it offers courses in B.Tech Handloom & Textile Technology, Post Graduate Diploma in Textile Processing, and a Diploma in Handloom and Textile Technology.

The admission is based on guidelines set by Anna University for all courses that are offered. Applications can be downloaded from the website. More details are as follows:

B.Tech admissions are based on scores obtained in JEE Main of the corresponding year to which the applicant wishes to apply for.
Along with scores in 10+2 in PCM for B.Tech admissions with 45% aggregate.
B.Tech Lateral Entry admission is merit based. Depending upon Diploma held in the corresponding area of Textile and Handloom or a B.Sc degree.
PG Diploma admissions are merit based depending upon scores obtained in either three year Diploma or B.Sc in a relevant area.
Admissions are merit based followed by counselling at IIHT Salem. Students would also be offered a stipend while enrolled in PG Diploma course.
Diploma admissions are based on scores obtained in class X with English as a core subject. Applications for Diploma can be downloaded from the website.

IIHT Salem is affiliated to Anna University Chennai and was established in 1960. It is the only institute offering B.Tech in Handloom & Textile Technology in the country currently. Courses offered are approved by AICTE.

The placement record for 2018-19 passing out batch recorded a highest CTC of INR 3.12 LPA for B.Tech and INR 2.49 LPA for Diploma holders. Various companies functioning in the state of Tamil Nadu were a part of this on-campus placement drive.

Students will have to register at the Tamil Nadi state government e-scholarship portal. Apart from the state scholarship, the college does not provide any other scholarship. Under the state scholarship schemes, there are 3 main types of scholarships, namely,

BC, MBC scholarship: These are given to students from the backward communities and reservation quotas. A tuition fee waiver is generally provided in this kind of scholarship.
Adi Dravidar Tribal Scholarship: This specific scholarship helps the tribal children to rise up in their careers and get better jobs, thus bringing progress and development in the tribal lifestyle.
