What Does a Systems Engineer Do?

Systems Engineers are specialized in researching, designing, developing, and testing microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) devices. They create systematic and physical layouts of integrated MEMS components or packaged assemblies consistent with the process, functional, or package constraints.

Some of their job responsibilities include:

  • They evaluate the materials used, fabrication methods, surface treatments, or packaging.
  • They conduct tests and trials to validate devices using a variety of inspection tools, testing protocols, and simulation software.
  • Using simulation software, they investigate characteristics like cost, processing capability, and performance of the potential MEMS device designs.
  • They refine the final MEMS design to optimize designs for target dimensions, processing constraints, and/or physical tolerances.
  • They oversee the conduct of prototype development or microfabrication activities.

Steps to Follow become a Systems Engineer

Some of the steps the individual may have to go through to build a career as a Systems engineer has been mentioned below:

  • Step 1: Candidates should take decisions immediately after class 10th. This will help them to map out their path easily.

Ques. How was your experience of doing an MS in the mechanical engineering department at IIT Madras?

● Top Answer By Tithi Banerjee on 17 Jun 23

Ans. My brother pursued his MS in Chemical Engineering from IIT Madras back in 2016 and these are some of his experiences for the overall MS program offered at IIT Madras- The MS program at IIT Madras is extremely fulfilling for students who want to pursue a career in research by going for a Ph.D. and Post Doc. The MS program is different from the M.Tech program. The M.Tech program is highly coursework oriented and is a better choice for securing a job. IIT Madras has, over the years, made efforts to give MS graduates an equal chance at placements. MS students tend to focus a lot more on their thesis as compared to M.Tech students. MS students are given an extra year to submit their thesis (2+1). An MS student, by the time of placement, will have worked extensively on a scientific topic and published at least one article in a reputed journal, or his article will be under review. This research work holds benefits during placements. The MS student’s CV is made impressive and data analysis and scientific reporting skills are highlighted. A little smart work will help you convince your interviewer of how these skills make you a suitable candidate for the offered position.  Very few IITs offer an MS degree and many employers are unaware of this course. The MS degree becomes demanding and tough because you need to get an article published in an international journal to obtain your degree.  Though not specific to the Mechanical branch, I hope this information about the MS program at IIT Madras helped you gain important insights regarding the same.Read more

Ques. How is the M.Tech in welding technology at NIT Trichy in terms of placements?

● Top Answer By Siddharth Mukharjee on 15 Sept 21

Ans. Welding technology has the distinct advantage of having some organizations who come to NIT Trichy solely to hire welding masters. In core welding firms, more than 50% placement is guaranteed. During the placement process, many software and mechanical firms visit the campus.  According to the recent placement highlights, the placement average for Welding Technology was around 60%. The placement average is less this year due to the ongoing pandemic.  The average CTC offered in the placement is 7-9 LPA.  The major recruiting companies that visit the campus are Tata Steel, Caterpillar, Lincoln, etc. NDT companies also recruit from Welding. If you have the required skills you can also sit for software and data science roles.  Almost 60% of the branch get placed in Mechanical core while the remaining 40% get placed in sectors like software, marketing, etc. If you have good CGPA and decent communication skills then getting into core sectors from Welding Engineering at NIT Trichy will not be that difficult.Read more

Ques. What are placement opportunities for students pursuing an M.Tech in mechanical engineering from IISC, Bangalore?

● Top Answer By Mayank Trivedi on 14 Jul 23

Ans. Well honestly, once you are in the grasp of the IISc magic, you will forget about placements, and your hunger for higher studies and research will grow instead. The intense workload and the dynamic research environment will bring you close to some of the geniuses who may be pursuing a Ph.D., UG, or master's. Interacting with them will make you realize that higher studies are a better option. Some who go for jobs anyway, come back to get a PhD sometime later. This is what the IISc effect is after all. As for the IISC placements for MTech Mechanical Engineering, students receive a minimum of 8 LPA packages with no limit on top packages varying from 15-25 LPA CTC. The major recruiters include companies like TATA motors, TATA steel, TCS research, Mahindra motors, Philips, Airbus, General Electric, Rolls Royce, TATA advanced system, PTC, L&T, and other design, manufacturing, and petroleum companies. The best part is that students of this branch can sit for placements in companies of Aerospace, Civil, Chemical, and Material Engineering as well.  In all placements at IISc won't be an issue for either branch yet I will say again, judging a research-oriented institute like IISc on the basis of placements is not justified. Read more
