The master's degree in teacher training in special needs education (M.Ed) enables students to pursue the teaching subjects taken during the bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, English, German, French, geography, history, Protestant religion, mathematics, music, physics, social sciences, Spanish, sport, Turkish, visual arts, or work studies/technology in greater depth.
Students also take the special needs education module, enabling them to focus on one of the following seven specialist areas: learning difficulties, speech difficulties, emotional and social development, physical and motor skills development, intellectual development, hearing impairment, or visual impairment.

Following are the requirement for the program:

A bachelor’s degree meets the requirements for a type 6 teaching career according to the KMK (Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs), i.e.,
- two teaching subjects in a combination permitted at Universität Hamburg—so one teaching subject and special needs education. Two of the three areas of learning, language and behavior must have been covered in the discipline of special needs education
- subject-specific didactics
- education
- teaching placements
For the hearing impairment specialist area within the special needs education module: proof of basic knowledge of German sign language
