As per the announcement made by Health and Finance Minister Hemanta Biswa Sarma, State Government of Assam will more 1,000 MBBS seats from 2021. Additionally, two more medical colleges will be set up at Diphu and Lakhimpur.

Health and Finance Minister of Assam had officially announced these new improvements after laying the foundation stone of Kamarbandha Ali Flyover near Jorhat Medical College and Hospital

The proposed 1000 MBBS seats will be included for admission from the MBBS admission session since NEET 2021. NEET 2021 is likely to be held in May 2021 by National Testing Agency (NTA).

NTA is expected not to conduct NEET twice this year albeit candidates’ demands. The application forms are expected to be available from January.

Addressing the gathering, he said that when he took office in 2006, he envisioned the transformation and development of the health sector as a step towards developing Assam.

“The state has decided to increase the number of MBBS seats in the state so that no meritorious students are deprived of the chance of pursuing medical education due to lack of seats or financial problems,” said the minister.

He added that many were suspicious whether the gargantuan task of transforming the health sector would be successful. He expressed satisfaction in being able to finalize the creation of medical colleges like Lakhimpur Medical College, even when most found it to be impossible.

The minister further added that it is his long-sought dream to improve the state’s health education sector. He is satisfied that he is now able to fulfil his commitment toward his people.

Assam, compared to other states in India, fared better during the pandemic. The state’s health department has managed to provide medical facilities to a large number of people during the pandemic, he added.
