Dr. Jaya Sharma is the head of the department of Home Science. She completed her Ph.D. in 2014 in Home Science. Overall, she has 21 years of experience in teaching and research.

Being the HOD, what are your roles and responsibilities towards the students?

"I take responsibility to pilot the progress of the department"

Being HoD, I provide strong academic leadership to maintain a disciplined environment. I try to lead the students toward academic excellence and help them accordingly. I take responsibility to pilot the progress of the department ensuring the highest probable standards.

How do you tend to establish healthy relations with the students and fellow faculty?

"Tries to update students regarding job prospect information"

To set up a healthy relationship with faculty, being HoD provides them freedom of work and skill enhancement through innovations as well as freedom of expression in a healthy way. Support students to promote self and growth. Tries to update students regarding job prospect information for their benefit. Inculcate innovative ideas

How do you try to bring in a practical approach to subjects and make them industry-oriented?

"We expose students with practical knowledge of practical fields"

Letting the student acknowledge the job perspectives of the field. At the same time providing ground-level training in practicals. I try to expose students to practical knowledge of practical fields through Visits, Exhibitions, and Workshops. 

How do you strategize the curriculum and how often does it get updated to make it befitting for the students?

"Introductory part of the curriculum to gain insight about the field"

Start with the introductory part of the curriculum to gain insight into the field then lead towards important sections. Sometimes the sections which form the ground for practical sections are taken initially instead of moving on to the course outline.

What are your views on the placements and higher education of the students from your department?

Promoting internships to get a better experience of work. Helping and promoting eligible students to find out concerned organizations on the college level.

How do you help your student cope with the competition being so high in the outside world?

"Try to focus on more and more experiential learning through practice"

To enable students to compete in the world, try to push students to compete against themselves. I try to maintain transparency in classroom performance between students. Try to focus on more and more experiential learning through practice. I encourage students to get more experience with good sportsmanship to gain practical knowledge.

Do you have any extracurricular activities/programs to enhance the skills of the students or expose them to real-world challenges?

Arrange Workshops, Exhibitions to know responses for products or work done in the laboratory to assess caliber. I acknowledge the students with the importance of the field in everyday life. 

What are the challenges you faced/are facing to uplift the quality of education in your department?

"There is a great need for designing"

Attendance is a challenge to attract students to the classroom. The curriculum should be designed according to the current scenario. There is a great need for designing it as per today’s job perspectives. Discipline is necessary for students as well as for faculties to conduct graceful academia and success.

What are the interventions and approaches you bring in apart from the curriculum to train/teach the students?

"Internship programs should be promoted to know the current eligibility demand"

Internship programs should be promoted to know the current eligibility demand. More presentations, seminars, etc. will boost student involvement in comparison to classroom teaching. Basic skills such as public speaking, writing, problem-solving, classroom interaction, and critical thinking will produce talented candidates. Performing more extracurricular activities related to courses will give students better practical experience.
