Being the Department Head of Commerce, what are your responsibilities towards the students?

"I am responsible to supervise the departmental activities and ensure development of students"

As the Head of Commerce Department, my first role is of a transformational leader and I am accountable to offer a good quality education to students and ensure their all around personality development. I also make sure that my students become good human beings apart from being proficient in their respective fields.

How do you establish a healthy relationship with your students and fellow faculty?

"By being a good communicator, listener and trusted friend for them"

The very essence of teaching is understanding your students from their point of view and this is only possible if healthy relations exist among the faculty and students. To maintain it I prefer to invest 5-10 minutes of my weekly lectures with the students discussing their problems and complications preferably related to studies. And when it comes to fellow faculty, I regularly interact with them and always stay ready to help them whenever I can.

How do you introduce an industry driven and a practical approach towards subjects?

"By using a variety of teaching methodologies and creating a participative learning ambiance in classrooms"

I follow the ideology of learning by seeing and observing instead of hearing and forgetting. Scientific studies also proves that students, if taught with a pragmatic approach are able to understand concepts better. In order to make students sensible and develop a realistic perspective in them, I take my classes with PPT and try to relate theoretical concepts with real time case studies to give more practical perspective to students.

How do you strategize and update the curriculum of your college to make it befitting for the students?

"It is drafted and updated regularly in line with industrial demands after consultation with experts"

At the start of every academic year I plan my monthly schedule and ensure to establish equilibrium between academics and co-curricular activities. I with the support of my fellow colleagues host and co-host various debates, speeches, conferences, seminars and webinars and make sure that each student participates in these activities at least once a year. And those who have interest in arts and sports are provided appropriate opportunities to showcase their talents. But I also ensure that the academics of students are not affected by all these.

What are your views on the placements and higher education of the students from your department?

"We have a dedicated Training and Placement Cell to prepare our students for both aspects"

I strongly believe that placements give such experience and skills which can put students in a better place, because they will only understand the importance of a job when they will work in a corporate world and put their theoretical knowledge to practice. And we have a dedicated placement cell to prepare our students for actual interview rounds and to guide them about their higher education plans. Higher education in the Commerce sector plays an important role as it contributes to the growth of the Indian economy by providing opportunities in the field of business, production and consumption.

How do you make your students ready to face the outside competitive world with more confidence?

"By enhancing their knowledge of outside world through seminars and workshops and of subjects through projects"

I have observed that the world doesn’t care about what you know, but it surely cares about how you utilize what you know. And therefore I prefer the concept of learning beyond the classroom, hence events like seminars and workshops are regularly conducted by us to enhance industrial exposure of students and make them aware about industrial development and requirements. Apart from this, field projects are assigned to them to make them learn how to evaluate information with accuracy and help them to work with patience while they work collaboratively with others.

Which extracurricular activities are organized in college to enhance the skills of students?

"Fun games, personality development trainings and debate competitions are regularly carried out in college"

For the purpose of ensuring the holistic development of our students and assisting them in developing essential critical skills we have many activities such as English communication and personality development sessions, reasoning and aptitude classes, sports which includes both indoor and outdoor games, training on fitness and self defense, elocution and debate competitions, celebration of women’s day and yoga day along with fairs and counseling sessions on career development. All these activities and events run in sync with their academics and they can participate in any of them without paying any participation fee.

What challenges are you facing to uplift the education quality of your department?

"Lack of basic Commerce subjects at school level and degraded education quality are major issues"

As much as I have observed, the quality of the education system in India has been lagging for quite some time. And the various challenges we are facing at different levels in uplifting the education quality of our department are as follows:

Unavailability of commerce subjects available at high school levels to give a basic knowledge to students which surely reflect when they struggle with choosing a better course for themselves, absence of practical exposure to supplement and strengthen their theoretical knowledge, outdated curriculum, no initiative from Degree colleges to guide students for higher studies and career building, absence of institutional body to promote commerce education, misunderstanding of the business organizations that the commerce graduate degree holders do not possess the right kind of skills are some of the worth noting challenges we need to take immediate action on.

What approaches do you bring in apart from the curriculum to teach the students?

"I regularly motivate them to do their best and also appreciate them for their contribution in departmental activities"

As I believe in a simple fact that knowledge comes from experiences and ideas so instead of using teacher-centred instructions, I appreciate the involvement of students in planning the departmental activities. This makes them more responsible and they confidently take charge of its effective implementation. In addition to this, projects on latest topics are assigned to them on a regular basis to help them utilize their knowledge in a better way and also we take their monthly assessments which helps us to detect where they are lacking.
