Director at BULMIM
Kindly tell us about your experience in the education industry and what makes it the best industry to work in?
Education industry in general and high education, in particular, provides an opportunity to equip the students, who are going to occupy various positions in the realm of business, with the appropriate and latest knowledge, relevant and up-to-date skill sets, thereby providing the economy with the competent workforce. This is a key reason for making education the best industry to work with.
Any of the significant challenge you faced in BULMIM?
None to my knowledge, however, the challenge that everyone in the management education faces is to keep abreast of the latest developments in the global economy and continuously adapt to changing needs of the industry.
What goals do you have in your mind for BULMIM?
Goal of BULMIM is detailed in a vision document titled “TOP TWENTY BY 2020”. The objectives under this are:
- To enhance the overall student experience
- To augment the knowledge and intellectual capital of BULMIM making it a vibrant canter of learning and skill development
- To develop further the industry interface enabling the students to have cutting-edge skills
- To enhance the brand equity of BULMIM.
Any suggestion you would like to give to the current youth and the aspiring students?
We live in an ever-changing world, where lifelong and continuous learning, updating and upgrading of skills are necessary to remain relevant. Disruptive innovations are the order of the day and one need to be alive to them. One needs to constantly sharpen the knife (Stefan Covey).
How do you look at the growth of students through placement opportunities available at BULMIM? How do you wish to push the envelope further?
The placement opportunities being provided by BULMIM to its students significantly motivate students to learn, assimilate, and apply theories, conceptual frameworks, to situations and analyse them. It also leads students to adopt and practice “ownership”.
The industry interface, alumni network and creating opportunities for students to hone their skills are the three areas we continue to work on to enhance and enrich the placement opportunities for our students.
How do you tend to establish a relationship with the students?
By practicing empathy.
Tell us about your path towards attaining the positions of the elite?
By adopting a twin-track approach. The first track is internal, that is controllable and the second track is external that is not controllable. Both are being addressed simultaneously –Internal – focusing on students attaining higher order thinking skills through various interventions; external – strengthening and widening the scope of linkages with the industry.
How do you build a positive school culture or climate?
Positivity is a rare to find these days. However, positivity is like a fragrance that reaches every nook and corner very easily, thereby encouraging others to become positive. By shifting the focus from being reactive to proactive; from firefighting to managing; and finally, by discovering opportunities that exist, but could not be identified, a positive culture is built.
What is your take on education being digitalized?
Digitalization of education is the way forward. However, I am of the view that it can supplement classroom teaching, but cannot supplant it. The role BULMIM’s faculty plays cannot be substituted by digitalization. A good faculty knows that every student is unique and adapts his approach to teaching to suit the needs of the students, but digital education generalizes them.
What would be your ideal school environment, and how would you encourage that kind of culture?
The ideal environment is an environment that encourages:
- Questioning the present methods, systems, and processes,
- proactive approach and
- innovation
In order that this kind of environment develops and prevails, all the stakeholders are consulted directly and indirectly, considering their interests as central to decision-making. At the same time transparency, fair and just policies, procedures and practices, open door policy is practiced.
