Dr. A Rajesh Kanna Interview is a Professor in the Amet University, Chennai. He graduated with B.Tech in Petrochemical from Prestigious Bharathidasan University Campus, Trichy and Completed M.Tech in Petroleum Refining and Petrochemicals from Esteemed Anna University Chennai Campus. He started his career as Lecturer at Rajiv Gandhi College of Engineering, Chennai during 2008. He further did Ph.D from globally recognized Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT M) in Petroleum Engineering. Dr. Rajesh is a recipient of Half-Time Research Assistantship (HTRA) funded by MHRD. He has published more than 35 research articles and Presented more than 20 papers in National and International Conferences. He is recipient of Bharat Ratna Dr. Radhakrishnan award for his achievement in Research during 2019.
What are your roles and responsibilities towards the students in Amet University, Chennai?
“To train, and prepare students by acquiring high quality of knowledge in the Petroleum sector”
My role is to mold students for acquiring high quality knowledge in the Petroleum sector. We train and prepare them to get placed in highly reputed organizations. I always try to give curricular and extracurricular activities for pupils. It allows them to overcome all challenges in the global competitive environment.
How do you tend to establish healthy relations with the students and fellow faculty?
“Provide workshops, conferences and engage students to participate in National/International Conference”
I dedicate my time to engaging students to participate in National and International Conferences. They need to participate in conferences and work with workshops. I train and insist them to conduct similar programs by advising through their course completion. Few fellow faculties are also involved in the above activities to guide them.
How do you try to bring in a practical approach towards subjects and make it industry oriented?
“Hands-on training, industrial visits and internships are available for pupils”
Our department gives both theoretical and practical knowledge. Students get hand-on training and improve their ideas. They can visit industries and work on internships to attain some experience. We always maintain a connection between Academia and Industry.
What are the best practices offered by the department to the students to gain necessary skills?
“Internships, mentored research, practicums and field-based learning experience are given to pupils”
We increase students' opportunities to get a good job after studies. Internships, mentored research, practicums and field-based learning experiences, service learning are provided to pupils. Students can clear their doubts and achieve career goals easily. We motivate them to attend NPTEL, MOOC and other online courses to upgrade their knowledge. Pupils are mentored by faculties to participate in Hackathon and raise their technical skills.

How do you strategize the curriculum and get updated to be befitting for the students?
“Modify syllabus as per the recent industrial requirements”
We follow revision and curriculum upgradation in our syllabus. Our board of studies is involved to enrich curriculum quality, and external activities. We modify curriculum as per industrial standards and stakeholders provide various suggestions for updation of the syllabus.
What are your views upon the placements and higher education for students?
“Placement training classes and mock tests for higher studies are available for students”
One of the main parameters concerned by us is placement. We ensure placement of students in top companies with high packages. Faculties organize placement training classes to students from the second year onwards. Faculties are also trained by trainers before they handle classes for the students.
How do you help students to cope up with competition in the outside world?
“Seminars, National and International Conferences are provided for pupils”
Our students are motivated to attend seminars, National and International conferences. We share technical events with students to improve their knowledge. Hence, students can quickly make improvements in outside competition.
Do you have any extracurricular activities to enhance the skills of the students or expose them to real-world challenges?
“Conferences, workshops, quizzes and meetings are provided to pupils”
A student chapter associated with SPE International included in our department. Pupils can participate in conferences, workshops, quiz and other idea challenges. I always conduct meetings with students to share all the information regarding global growth and activities.
What are the challenges you faced to uplift the quality of education in Amet University, Chennai?
“Update education quality and strengthen bondage between department and industry”
One of the primary challenges is to uplift quality education. Another one is to strengthen bondage between departments and an industry. It helps us for Industrial Training and Internships for candidates. We try to improve their theoretical knowledge into practical and hands-on.
What was your vision and how are you trying to achieve the same?
“To involve students in active research and perform experiments”
I joined as Assistant Professor in the department in July 2017. We are involved in skilled oriented teaching apart from curriculum enrichment. I strengthened the department by providing skill-oriented training both on campus and in industries. My vision is to involve students in active research and make them perform experiments. We published articles in Conference proceedings, Journals and Patent filing.
How does the curriculum of your Amet University, Chennai ensure the best practice of the industry?
“Take suggestions from industry experts, and be involved in framing the curriculum”
We accept suggestions by Industrial Experts on updating curriculum. Our campus prepares students to face the challenges in the industries. Alumni and Students are involved in framing the curriculum and syllabus. Their inputs are considered to be vital.
How does the college enhance the skills of the faculty according to the industry standards?
“Provide International and national conferences through training for students”
We encourage faculties to present their work in International and national conferences. They get training from the industrial experts. It leads them to enhance their skills by visiting industries.
What approaches do you bring in apart from curriculum to train the students?
“Smart Classes and live interactions are available for candidates”
We teach students through flipped and Smart Classes. Live interactions and other approaches assist pupils to perform tasks quickly. It enriches the curriculum knowledge and reaches the students without any hurdles.
