Dr. Ram Babu Sharma has been working as the Principal and Professor of Himalayan Group of Professional Institutions, Sirmaur, Himachal Pradesh. He has an excellent academic background in the Pharmacy domain and several outstanding achievements as a Teacher, Researcher, and Administrator. He started his career as a Production Chemist in an Indian MNC in 2004 and worked there for 1 year, but due to his passion for teaching, he cracked the GATE examination in 2005 and took admission in M.Pharma. in Department of Pharmaceutical Science of MLS University of Udaipur. And finally, in 2007 he started his Teaching journey as a Lecturer at Sanjeevan College of Pharmacy of Rajasthan where he worked for 2.5 years and later on he joined the Department of Pharmaceutical Science at Jodhpur National University, Jodhpur as an Assistant Professor and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2013. Apart from all this, he has also worked as an Associate Professor, Principal and Director at LR Institute of Pharmacy, at Chandigarh University and finally he joined Himalayan Group of Professional Institutions. He has done PhD from the Rajasthan University of Health Sciences in 2013. And apart from his administrative skill he has proved himself to be a good Teacher, Mentor, Guide for the organizations he has worked with. He has successfully guided 2 PhD students, 80 B. Pharma students and more than 30 students have been awarded an M.Pharma. degree under his guidance and supervision. He has also completed the project of Direct Science and Technology, has published more than 50 national and international research papers in various reputed journals and has authored 4 chapters in national and international books. Presently, he has more than 350 citations with eight impact factors, as per Google Scholar and he has presented several research papers at various national and international conferences and seminars. In addition to this, he has filed 4 patents with the Indian and German patent offices and is an active member of different academic committees at various universities, a life member or honorary member of several academic bodies, and is also on the Editorial Board of national and international refereed journals. What are the key factors that keep you connected with the education sector?

"Satisfaction and happiness I receive after teaching students is the biggest factor behind my association"

In my opinion, one of the greatest and most virtuous services provided to humanity is to educate the young generation of society. And it gives me immense happiness and satisfaction when I guide my students for appropriate professional opportunities in accordance with their skills and interests and expectations of the industry and society. So I believe all these factors together have helped me to stay connected with the education sector.

Being the Principal of the College, what is your philosophy of leadership?

"Leadership is all about dealing effectively with people and ensuring their skills are used in the best way possible"

I firmly believe that the truest kind of leadership is that where a leader knows how to make best use of available resources and people to meet the end goals of an institution and to empower them throughout the process. In addition to this, enabling others including students and teachers so that they can face future challenges confidently and patiently is also the responsibility of the person who leads them.

How do you strategize the key programs and plans for the marketing and administration of your college? 

"By regularly organizing sessions and surveys to stay connected with outside world"

Being the college Principal, I select the programs based on the fundamental and developing technologies that are being used in the present and will be required in the future too. And to enhance our reach among our potential students, make them aware about our programs, facilities and achievements, we organize a wide variety of surveys and other programs on a regular basis. 

In your experience, how studying at your institution will be beneficial for students? 

"Students will get abundant learning and placement opportunities here"

We thoroughly analyze and consider the standards defined by the Pharmacy Council of India while delivering different kinds of courses to students. And we have also added a few inter and intra-disciplinary skill development courses depending on the students' interests and worldwide requirements. Apart from all this, when we implement the curriculum defined by PCI, our focus remains on offering the best industrial training and skill-based education to young minds.

How does the curriculum of HIP ensure the best practices of industry?

"The curriculum we follow us designed by PCI experts itself hence contain best industrial practices"

We are affiliated to HPTU and follow the curriculum designed by The Pharmacy Council of India and special executive and council members are involved in the whole process and they thoroughly analyze and consider the existing and future developments, requirements and trends of business. And the curriculum is regularly updated by them and students' knowledge is further supplemented with extra sessions and value added courses in accordance with the demands of the Pharmaceutical sector.

How is your college more welcoming to students of different races or economic backgrounds?

"Fees of our courses is easily affordable and financial help and scholarships are offered too by us to needy and eligible students"

The fee structure of our college is very nominal and in line with standards defined by the Government of Himachal Pradesh and we do not ask for any fancy charges from students for anything. In addition to this, the environment of our college is extremely healthy, and all students are treated equally regardless of their caste, creed or religion. Financial assistance is also provided by the institute to underprivileged and meritorious students in the form of scholarships and there are special scholarships for reserved category students. 

What are your roles and responsibilities for the college and students?

"I am responsible to make sure students receive best quality education and amenities in college"

As head of the institution, my responsibility towards students is to provide them with the best education in accordance with industry and society needs, engage them in extracurricular activities of college, provide them personality development and soft skill training for their complete personal and professional growth. And when it comes to college, enhancing the business value of the institution is my main responsibility.

What do you think should be the institute’s top priority over the next 10 years?

"We should focus on introducing PG programs and improving our education practices to get accreditation"

We are planning to introduce new PG programs in Pharmacology and Pharmaceutical Chemistry in the coming 10 years and along with this, we will soon be launching a PhD program for students. Last but not the least, we should focus on getting Accreditation from reputed authorities like NAAC and NBA.

When you first came to HIP College, what was your vision for it and how far have you come in implementing that vision?

"My aim was to work for the development of our college and make it a top Institutions of our area"

When I joined HIP, my prime objective was to make our institution one of the best Pharmacy schools of Himachal Pradesh and bring it in the top 100 list all over the nation within the following 5 years. And even though I have only worked at this college for nearly 1 year, I can already see that my ideas and actions are paying off and I am confident enough that soon I will achieve all my goals with everyone's support and my own hard work. 

What would you like people to know about your college that makes it unique and different from others?

"We have best faculties to teach students and courses to make students industry ready"

As far as I have observed the education sector, so Pharmacy schools have proliferated rapidly during the past 20 years. And parents and students often due to lack of knowledge about the quality of education being provided by any institute, end up selecting the wrong college to pursue their dream courses. So my humble request to all such students and parents is to carefully analyze things and give us a chance as we have the best infrastructure, Faculties, facilities and we assure 100% placement assistance to students. The main source of our college strength is our world class infrastructure, amazing team of highly qualified and extensively experienced faculty members, well-stocked labs, our courses and placement assistance we offer to students. Along with this, we are close to industrial locations like the Poanta Sahib and Kala-Amb regions, as well as Chandigarh which gives an extra benefit to students with respect to opportunities. 

What are some of the biggest challenges you see for higher education in general?

"Getting suitable students for Pharmacy domain is a real struggle for institutions nowadays"

The most difficult thing in front of higher education institutions currently is to attract such students who can comfortably study Pharmacy education and have the capabilities to deal with the challenges this field offers.

Any suggestions which you would like to give to the current youth and ambitious students?

"Do the job that suits your interest and passion and keep learning new things"

I would like to advise my dear students to keep upgrading their skills and knowledge and make them ready for the corporate and cut-throat competitive world at an earliest basis. And try to look for the job that suits your interest and passion and is also in demand in the outside world. Also be aware that tremendous opportunities are available. They should be aware that there are many chances available for qualified and competent professionals, the only thing required from them is that they should be able to lead a team of diverse range of people. 

What are some of the plans that you are currently designing for HIP international affairs and students?

"We are planning to collaborate with reputed industries and institutions on national and global level"

As we all are aware that the recently introduced education policy has opened the doors for foreign universities to run their programs in India. So, we are planning to collaborate with reputed foreign universities, industries and Indian institutes like NIPER, IIT for ensuring best learning opportunities and industrial exposure for students. Apart from this, we are planning to organize students and faculty exchange programs in association with top-ranked universities and institutions both in India as well as abroad.

How do you establish a healthy relationship and environment in your institute?

"By addressing everyone's queries on time and providing them satisfactory resolution"

For the purpose of ensuring a good environment and healthy relationship between everyone in college, our institute has established numerous counseling centers to address students, teachers and staff issues and resolve them on time. In addition to this, we have established different kinds of committees at both the institute and student levels so that students can lodge their complaints properly and can put forward their grievances directly to the institute's senior administration. Also, a wide variety of amenities including cafeterias, gyms, hostels, a central library, indoor and outdoor sports facilities, and hostel facilities are being provided to the students by us for ensuring a pleasant and healthy atmosphere. Last but not the least, mentor sessions and open house discussions with management people are held on a regular basis to make students feel important and connected and also to give them a platform where they can give suggestions and inputs with respect to anything without any hesitation.
