Dr. Sathisha A.D is working as an Associate Professor in the Department of Agricultural Biochemistry/Chemistry at Sampurna Group of Institutions. He is a M.Phil in Biochemistry and PhD in Chemistry (Specialization: Medicinal Biochemistry-Anticancer Drugs & Cancer Biology). He has 13 years of experience in the Teaching and Research field. He has also worked as a Scientist, Project fellow and as a Medicinal Analytical Chemist. He has worked in the dept. of Biochemistry, College of Health Sciences, abroad. He has been awarded with Bharat Ratna Rajiv Gandhi Gold Medal Award. He has published 18 research papers in International Journal. His current research areas are Anticancer drugs and Cancer biology, Inflammation, and Depression.
What are your roles and responsibilities?

My main accountability for my students is nurturing them with enriched knowledge and making them subject specialists in agricultural/Plant Biochemistry to conduct practical experiments in the field of research and innovation. Apart from that, creating an effective classroom learning environment and academic advising is also equally important for me.
How do you ensure healthy relations with the students and fellow faculties?
“By providing them a friendly environment to communicate”
For a healthy relationship with students, I make sure to take some time out of a busy schedule for them to visit my office where they can openly discuss their problems, doubts be it regarding the concept that they don’t understand or some personal issues. Coming to fellow faculty, maintaining a good rapport and disciplined behavior, sharing academic activities and good interaction and getting along are some of the practices which I generally follow.
How do you make a subject more practical and industry oriented?
“My curious behavior pushes me to explore more and hence practical approach automatically comes into picture”
Exploring the hidden values in plants and their active principles as medicinal nutritional, culinary and/or ornamental. Knowing how efficient the phytochemical is in a particular disease treatment, making formulation studies on nutraceuticals. Coming how I make it more industry oriented, so I keep on indulging myself in scientific exhibitions and in meetings with industry experts.
Which best practices are offered to the students to achieve required skills?
“We offer multiple activities and events to provide better learning opportunities”
Along with teaching and learning process, we organize hands-on-training on biochemical/biotechnological techniques, workshops/symposium and classroom seminars. We also conduct activities like guest lectures, group discussions. We also encourage our students to be updated with current affairs in relevant fields to strengthen their knowledge, communication and presentation skills.

How is the curriculum strategized to make it befitting for the students?

According to University guidelines and curriculum committee suggestions as per the requirement of course and capacity of students to obtain a degree, necessary changes are made on a regular basis with assessment and feedback. Depending on the adequacy of course, subjects, concepts and demonstrations, curriculum is updated to meet the requirements.
What do you think about higher education for the students of your department?

They would get a wide opportunity to work in different agriculture based companies, research centers, agricultural consultants and other scientific bodies etc. Their skills and expertise would definitely fit to the greater extent after grabbing good opportunities.
How do you prepare your students for this competitive world?
“By providing them best knowledge and encouraging them to think out of the box”
By following the practice of effective teaching and learning process, motivating them to prepare thoroughly to improve their soft skills as well as subject knowledge. For this I generally use innovative methods of teaching techniques to strengthen practical and research knowledge of students.
What challenges have you faced to uplift the quality of education of your department?
“To make our students more focused towards study”
Say, very nominal challenges, dragging some of the student’s attention, towards the study line up, counselling and preparing them to become a best as all in one in this competitive field.
Apart from curriculum, what approaches do you bring in to teach students?
“Through seminars, Hands-on training programs and workshops”
By teaching them how to integrate and apply subject knowledge to the real world in agriculture through problem based crop and productivity improvement that would help farmers facing countless problems. By visiting the agriculture field along with them and by giving awareness about the plants, toxicity, and soil profile etc. and getting trained by expert farmers etc.
What are your college’s greatest strengths and how can it be enhanced?
“Our teaching staff, students along with non-teaching staff”
Our magnificent building, well-structured infrastructure, adequate equipment and instruments required according to ICAR, Iconic and well expertise teaching faculties, room to extracurricular activities, cultural activities, open air garden to take fresh breeze, Gym equipment and enough cropland area made stronger department and the college as well.
