Dr. Mohsin Khan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Public health Dentistry of Vyas Dental College and hospital. He has completed his 10 years in the Dentistry field and has completed his Master of Dental Surgery degree. Besides this, he has also been honored for being appointed as a nodal officer for the Swachh Bharat Summer Internship Program.

What are the challenges you face in the field of Dentistry?

“Very less population is aware about oral dental problems and its treatment”

In India, there is a severe maldistribution of health care services, resources and infrastructure. Oral diseases are also a major public health problem. Our department (Public Health Dentistry) aims to improve the oral health of the population through preventive and curative services. However, its achievements in India are being questioned probably because of lack of proficiency and skill among department personnel. 

How do you focus on practical learning for students?

“By providing practical training more related to mass population rather than individual ones”

Public Health Dentistry is that branch of dentistry which provides expertise in population-based dentistry, oral health surveillance, policy development, community-based disease prevention and health promotion and the maintenance of the dental safety net. The practical learning system which we have adopted along with theory gives students clear and contrast explanations about the facts.

Would you give any suggestions to the new generation students?

“Students should know how to deal with different cases related to medicine and surgery”

The most important thing the new generation students need to know is how to deal with the emergencies. Our institute has developed a well structured undergraduate program for providing the students an introduction of normal human structure, development, function & behaviour leading to understanding of the disease, its prevention & treatment. Our aim is to produce a graduate competent in general dental practice & a sound knowledge.

We have tried our best in creating a world-class infrastructure for the faculty for effective teaching. This also includes adapting the latest technologies and upgrading other facilities as well. We have also laid a lot of emphasis on the intellectual capital of our Institutions and may boast of a very rich faculty strength not only in terms of numbers but also for providing quality education. 

How do you make a healthy environment for your students?

“By doing interactive behavior with the students and solve their doubts”

We organize the class in a manner that the class becomes more interactive for the students. We also try to create a good rapport with the students so that they can easily discuss their issues and doubts. Making the presentations more pictorial rather than text to make them easier to understand also helps us to make a healthy environment for the students.

How do you help students to cope up with the high competition?

Our department imparts knowledge, motivates, and guides students in changing over to a healthy oral hygiene routine as, in the field of Public Health Dentistry, students have to communicate with the urban as well as rural population.
