What are your roles and responsibilities towards the students?

“Being truly student-centric”

Our objective is to develop students' capacity to function successfully in an ever-changing global society. We strive for excellence by focusing on students primarily. All aspects of the academic experience are tuned to deliver excellence be it study programs, faculty development, networking with industry and sustainable practices. As an Academic Head, my roles and responsibilities include administration of the Degree and Diplomas in Hotel, Tourism and Restaurant Management programs, quality assurance in assessments and Continuous Professional Development (CPD) of faculty members.

How do you strategize the curriculum and how often it gets updated to make it befitting for the students?

“Putting the best of both worlds together”

Hospitality programs typically are a mix of theoretical in-class study and practical training in specially designed laboratories that mimic the departments of a hotel such as front office, housekeeping, food and beverage service and food production. Our curriculum ensures to deliver the same keeping intact the best practices. Industry experts further supplement classroom learning with unique insights during guest lectures. The curriculum sees progressive upgrades once every six months and reflects changes in the hospitality and travel environment.

When you came to college, what was your vision and how are you trying to achieve the same?

“To take the institute to the greatest heights”

I joined JSHM in 2007 with a vision of being a part of an international hospitality institute. Experienced and certified hospitality educators from around the country blended an Indian degree with international curriculum, global best practices, comfortable and modern infrastructure to ensure a class-leading academic experience hitherto unknown in Gujarat. Backed by Jindal Hotels Limited, Vadodara’s leading hospitality business, and partnered with Cesar Ritz Colleges, Switzerland, and Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University, JSHM continues to offer the best of both worlds.

What would you define as your institute’s greatest strength?

“The environment we have been able to provide to our students”

I personally take pride in the practices we have adapted to. Quality education is made up of many factors, including but not limited to a continually evolving curriculum, trained faculty, modern infrastructure, and student placements. The curriculum based on Swiss standards helps assess learning outcomes, encourages research, and leads to the more wholesome development of students' knowledge, skills, and attitude. Our certified educators bring with them a rich tapestry of experiences, teaching styles and domain knowledge. Also, JSHM’s infrastructure has always been contemporary, comfortable, safe, hygienic and a class above.

How does the curriculum of your college ensure the best practice of the industry?

“Taking all the best aspects of the curriculum and ensuring the implementation”

JSHM’s curriculum reflects the best practices of the hospitality industry in three aspects:

  • Behavioural – where students, staff and management follow the highest levels of grooming, courtesy, interpersonal behaviour.
  • Operational – the practice of hygiene and sanitation, standard operating procedures, fiscal prudence, human resource management, safety and security
  • Problem Solution – where waste management, environment protection, sustainable development is practised.

How does the college enhance the skills of the faculty and prepare them according to the industry standards?

“Increasing the industry connect for a better curriculum delivery”

JSHM encourages all members of faculty to undergo Continuous Professional Development (CPD). This involves a 360-degree assessment that includes self-evaluation, peer evaluation, student feedback, and feedback from superiors. Teachers are encouraged to get certified as a Certified Hospitality Educator (CHE) from the American Hotel and Lodging Educational Institute (AHLEI, USA) to ensure consistency and superior quality of teaching and training. JSHM’s faculty members offer consultancy services to several industries, groups, and individuals. These projects enhance the knowledge and the skills picked up are subsequently transferred to students.

What valuable advice would you like to give the students for them to have a prosperous career ahead?

“Have true passion and unlimited love for whatever you choose to do”

Students in this industry must acquire the skills and knowledge to be a diplomatic professional. They must have a good knowledge of human nature, be a good organiser, an excellent manager, with the ability to cope with the unavoidable setbacks. Moreover, they should be practically inclined and knowledgeable about the rational administration of a hotel. Above all, they must love their profession more than anything else.
