Mrs. J. Mary Catherine is an Head of the Department in the Computer Science & Quality Assistance of Chevalier T.Thomas Elizabeth College For Women, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. She did M.Sc, M.B.A. and pursued Ph. D in Periyar University, Salem. Later, she cleared UGC-NET and TN-SET in 2012. She also held key responsibilities in the College Website Committee, Internal Exam Committee, and IQAC. Mrs. J Mary stepped into the role of IQAC Coordinator from June 2021. She has more than 13 years of experience in teaching.

Being a Faculty of the Computer Science Department, what are your roles and responsibilities toward the students?

“To ensure good quality education, skills and resources for pupils”

 My major responsibility in the Department is to ensure good quality education and knowledge sharing among the students or faculty. As the Head of the Department, I guide my faculty and students to use the resources of the college optimally. I ensure effective delivery of curriculum along with add-on life skills. My responsibility also includes building a safe and harmonious environment in the department.


How do you tend to establish healthy relations with the students and fellow faculty in Chevalier T.Thomas Elizabeth College For Women?

“Work together to conduct events and activities on the campus”

We practice collaborative management in our department. Our faculty and students work together during organizing events and activities. They are well connected through personal and academic mentoring. I ensure a supportive and trustworthy environment for the faculty and students. It will foster growth and inclusivity.


How do you try to bring in a practical approach to subjects and make it industry-oriented?

“Workshops, training, industrial visits, projects, internships, and live demos are available for pupils”

Every programming paper is well supported by hands-on lab programming experience. Students get theoretical concepts and well supplemented through workshops, training, industrial visits, projects, internships, live demos etc. All are well connected to the operating environment to assess the real-time implementation of the concepts.


What are the best practices offered by Chevalier T.Thomas Elizabeth College For Women to the students which help them gain necessary skills? 

“Google classrooms, collaborative learning and regular classroom sessions are provided to pupils”

Our department encourages participative and collaborative learning. We integrated with OERs based on regular classroom teaching, and supplementary materials through Google classrooms. Student-centric teaching methodologies are some of the best practices followed to equip them with necessary skills.

How do you strategize the curriculum and get updated to make it befitting for the students?

“Encourage students to attend workshops, conferences, internships and industrial visits”

Our curriculum is well designed by the University as per the current industrial trends. The curriculum delivery process is tailored around gaining hands-on industry experts. Students can attend workshops, conferences, internships and industrial visits from our campus. They are encouraged to use MOOCs and OERs for knowledge enhancement. 


What are your views on the placements and higher education for the students from Chevalier T.Thomas Elizabeth College For Women?

“Placement drives, and training in various aspects of campus interviews are available for candidates” 

Our students get training in various aspects of campus interviews like group discussion, aptitude tests from the first year itself. It is useful when they attempt competitive entrance exams for higher education. Our students are interested in starting their careers immediately and are mentored by the department faculty. The placement cell assists pupils to select the right career path. Technical support is given to them for attending placement drives online. 


How do you help your student to cope up with the competition being so high in the outside world?

“Special training, high-quality resources and industry interaction through internships are given to pupils”

The faculty and students are motivated to build a strong network with academic peers outside the institution. Regular interaction with alumni provides the necessary inputs for the students to face the competition. Special training is given by the college to train the students for competitive exams. They get high-quality resources and industry interaction through internships, projects or workshops.


Do you have any extracurricular activities or programs to enhance the skills of the students or expose them to real-world challenges?

“Support students to be active in clubs like Photography, Fine Arts, Sports, Event Management, YRC, RRC, NSS, etc.”

Students are encouraged to take an active part in various clubs like Photography, Fine Arts, Sports, Event Management, YRC, RRC, NSS etc. They are excelling in extracurricular activities and are recognized with certificates or honors. All these improvise skills of pupils in different areas.

As an academician, I would like to encourage the students to delve into the subject of interest rather than just grazing on it. They must shift their focus from gaining marks to acquiring skills. It requires a lot of dedication and commitment. Students should learn to connect their knowledge to the environment around them for the betterment of society.
