DAV College Jalandhar

Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Arora is presently the Principal of DAV College Jalandhar. The institute is his fourth assignment as a Principal. He has also served as manager and Regional Director for different schools. He has been a part of the educational sector and the institute for more than three decades. He believes in open communication with the students to create a better atmosphere in the institute.

What interests you to work for the education sector and how has your experience been so far working as the principal of such a big Organization?

“The opportunity to connect with younger minds for upbringing the changes society requires”

As far as being principal is concerned I have worked with various students’ security and people from all walks of life. I believe that a teacher is always present in one person at all times. Now I have been principal for so long but I still cherish being a teacher so that I can teach students and impart my knowledge to them. Students also teach a lot of things to us and we have various experiences with them if a teacher is interacting with an open heart and open mind. Being with the younger generation I get to know the requirements and the desires of the students and what they feel like to do.

Being principal of DAV College, Jalandhar what are your views on online education?

“Balancing the sides of pros and cons for online education for shaping a way to smooth learning”

As far as online education is concerned, touch therapy is still missing which is irreplaceable in terms of teaching. However looking from another perspective, the use of Technology has now become so efficient that it has a lot of advantages too. Now students are taking their classes by sitting at their homes and saving their energy in traveling and also the cost of living outside their homes and efficiently utilizing their time. I believe that now we have invested so much in it so we should make the most out of this investment and use a blend of online and offline classes.

How have you planned to adapt to this change in education from the classroom to online?

“Accepting the new normal for paving ways to unstoppable learning and education”

In the initial stages of this pandemic, neither students nor the teachers were mentally prepared to take classes online. Basic infrastructure was required to teach the students online and with time we provided workshops to the teachers to get their hands on this technology to teach online. I believe that this online education has increased the efficiency of teaching and teachers now prefer to use this medium more efficiently.

How have you planned on training the teachers that are not so tech-savvy?

“Training for better understanding and providing quality education to the students on an online platform”

Regular and rigorous training of the teachers on the development of Technology and uses of the various platforms like Google meet and zoom training was given to the teachers as and when required. Now a hundred percent of the staff is tech-savvy to deliver their lectures online. Deficiency in terms of delivering the lectures and attending various seminars and webinars has increased and the travel time invested for every session has now reduced.

What are the changes that you have observed in the education sector based on the new education policy?

“Adopting new policies only are bringing a positive attitude in the Indian educational system”

I believe that a drastic positive change will be seen in the education sector in India. The different regulatory bodies like UGC, AICTE, and NAAC will be merged and a single Commission on all India level will be in a place that will regulate the education sector. Even the courses will now be linked with the industries in which job opportunities are available. One more added advantage with this new education policy is that it shouldn't be able to save their academic credentials on a cloud-based format where they can easily access their certificates and degrees anywhere they want.

Is there any specific course that DAV College Jalandhar offers that not many students know but, such as being efficient in today's time?

“Special focus on Agri-based education with placements to have a defined career”

We have a special course based on Food Science as we know that Punjab has an agriculture-based economy and most of the trade is in the agriculture sector and Food Industry only so we are offering courses related to food and Science. This is the stream in which 100% of job placements have been seen in the past couple of years. Apart from the regular courses journalism and mass communication are also in trend and it is seen that students are quite interested in starting up their ventures in videography, photography and other trades related to Mass Communication.

What are the greatest strengths of DAV College Jalandhar?

“Well structured academia with several outgoing activities for skill development and personality enhancement”

The academics and the sports gaining interest are the major strengths possessed by our college. . 90% of the doctors in Jalandhar city belong to DAV College Jalandhar. I can proudly say that 2 years back, the chief secretaries of Punjab Haryana and Himachal belonged to DAV. We have a huge contribution to sports. Recently, in the Red Bull Cricket Tournament, we have managed to achieve first position PAN India. The third aspect is the extracurricular activities. DAV College has given a lot of entertainment to artists like Hansraj Hans, Sukhwinder Singh, and Jagjit Ji, etc. All of them are products of DAV College Jalandhar.

How would you describe your leadership style and what is your philosophy on leadership?

“Participative leadership and collective decision making for the betterment of the institute”

I believe that nowadays collectively leadership style is very important and should be followed. One should always take their staff and colleagues with themselves in decision making and their opinions and suggestions should always be entertained. This type of group leadership is more efficient. One should always ensure that students' participation and involvement is present in the committee so that their viewpoint to solve the problem is always considered.

Any message or advice you would like to give to your students and the other aspiring students?

“Dedication and hard work should always be followed to have a stable future”

A lot of dedication and devotion are required for achieving success. Always be a good listener. You cannot become a good speaker until you are a good listener. Institutes should always adopt entrepreneurship style and they should always aim to become an entrepreneur who can be a job giver rather than a job seeker. And the last thing I want to say is that whatever we have taken from nature we should always give it back with due respect after you started working. This recycling is very important in life.
