GATE 2021: Two Newly Introduced Subjects: Environmental Science and Humanities Receives More Applicants, Check Details Here


GATE 2021: Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay has received a fair number of applications for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE 2021) for newly introduced two subjects-Environmental Science and Engineering (ES) and Humanities and Social Sciences (XH) in comparison to the existing courses.

Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay has added two new subjects to the GATE 2021 list, i.e., ES (Environmental Science and Engineering) and XH (Humanities and Social Sciences), increasing the total to 27 subjects.

Professor of Civil Engineering at IIT Bombay and GATE 2021 organizing chairman, Deepankar Choudhury, disclosed that GATE 2021 has received applications for a total of 14,804 for Environmental Science, while 14,196 applications for Humanities were submitted. 

The newly added subjects have received more applications as compared to the existing nine subjects, including Textile and Fibre Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Statistics.

Moreover, a slight increase in the number of registrations is witnessed comparatively to last year. As per reports, more than 8 Lakh applications are received for the GATE 2021 exam.

“The institute has got 8.83 lakh applications for GATE 2021 as compared to 8.77 lakh registrations for the GATE 2020,” said Deepankar Choudhury, IIT Bombay.

GATE 2021 registration ended on October 14, 2020. The exams will take place from February 5-7, 2021, and February 12-14, 2021.

GATE 2021: Subject-wise Registration

Further, this year Biomedical Engineering (BM) is among the three subjects that have received low applications. The subject was introduced last year.

On the other hand, Textile Engineering and Fibre Science (TF), Statistics (ST) are two other subjects which have received the lowest registration from students. 

“A total of 1990 and 2026 applications have been received for Statistics and Textile Engineering and Fibre, respectively. For BM, only 2292 candidates have registered,” said Choudhury.

Deepankar Choudhury, the organizing chairperson stated, “Few institutes in India offer Biomedical Engineering at the undergraduate level, which could be the reason for limited takers for this subject in GATE.”

“Besides, Ecology and Evolution, Production and Industrial Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering are six subjects which have got the lowest registration counts as compared to new entrants Humanities and Environmental Science and Engineering,” he further added.

GATE 2021: Female applicants

The exam authorities have also announced that the GATE 2021 has received 2.9 lakh registrations from female candidates. 

Regarding the increase in the number of female candidates, the chairperson said, “Addition of Humanities might be attributed to an increase in female candidates. Close to 60% of applicants in Humanities are represented by female aspirants.” 

Furthermore, it has been informed that for the humanities category, over 8600 female applications have been received.

Zone-wise registration

Due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the authorities were able to observe the real demographic representation of the students in the exam. With the educational institutions being closed and work from home opportunities available to the working professionals, some candidates have decided to return to their native homes.

Deepankar Choudhury also stated, “The location of the candidates got re-adjusted which led to an increase in the number of applications in Guwahati, Kanpur and Kharagpur regions.”

About GATE 2021

GATE 2021 is a national level entrance examination organized by IIT Bombay for admission into several programs offered by IITs, NITs, etc. The application mode of GATE 2021 is online. 

There will be 195 exam centers in India and 6 abroad for GATE 2021. The validity of the GATE score is up to 3 years, and several PSUs (Public Sector Units) approves the GATE score for their recruitment process.
